Student answer (Band 5.0)

Saving money is a good habit, and this habit should be adopted by people of all ages. One of the view is that, young people should not save money and spend all to enjoy for the best. Another view is that they should save money for difficult times. According to my perspective, young people should not spend all, thay should have something to spend on the hurdles in future.

Young people should spend all the money they have to enjoy. They should spend on the trending products and all, so, they do not feel left behind.

They have a long time to spend, they can start saving when they are grown up. They should not be stopped from spending, which basically makes them mature by making mistakes. So they know when they are grown up, where to spend and where not to.

Another view is that, young people should not spend, instead they should develop a habit to save money. They should be wise and take their decisions strongly and implement them strictly.

So, when these young people are grown up, they would be having a good amount of money to spend. At this time of life they would be mature enough and spend the saved amount wisely. For example, they now know what to wear and what to buy, what suits them, and what is actually good for them. At this time of life, they know their needs so can spend well on them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of whether young people should save money, concluding with the perspective that saving is beneficial. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly in the body paragraphs. Furthermore, the response is under-length, containing 245 words compared to the minimum requirement of 250 words, which restricts the depth of task fulfilment and leads to a penalty under Task Achievement. Phrases like 'spend all the money they have to enjoy' are stated rather than fully explored or supported with compelling arguments. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met and provide fully extended, cohesive explanations for each viewpoint.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates some organisation with clear paragraphing, separating the introduction, the view supporting spending, the view supporting saving, and the conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and abrupt transitions. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes mechanically applied, such as the repeated use of 'Another view is that' and 'At this time of life'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in 'spend on the trending products and all', which lacks precision. Paragraphing is present, but overall, the essay lacks the smooth flow and sophisticated logical links expected at higher band levels.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but it remains basic and repetitive throughout the essay. The writer frequently reuses words like 'spend', 'money', 'young people', and 'save'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'spend all to enjoy for the best', 'spend on the hurdles in future', and 'take their decisions strongly'. While the communication of ideas is generally understandable despite these limitations, the range of vocabulary is restricted and fails to demonstrate flexibility or precision in discussing financial habits.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures frequently result in grammatical errors. Examples of inaccurate structures and punctuation include 'One of the view is that', 'thay should have something to spend on the hurdles in future', and 'they would be having a good amount of money to spend'. Errors in subject-verb agreement, article usage, and spelling ('thay') are noticeable throughout the text. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the writer from achieving a higher band score.
