Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays with many countries economy on the decline and inflation on the rise there has been discussions in society whether everyone should save money including young people.

With how expensive everything has gotten there is without a doubt need for everyone to save money and think before they spend.New iphones, cars, luxury accessories ETC look good on the outside but will empty your pockets especially for those who dont have much to begin with.If people saved all the money they spend on lavish things they could easily get by the month without spending their entire paycheck and then later using their credit cards just to survive, which later pile up accumulating interest and putting them in even more debt this whole cycle is caused by the unnessecary expenditure of money without proper planning of their salary for the whole month . especially young people are keen to recklessly spend money just to look cool in society.

on the other hand people argue that they're only going to live one life and its better to fulfill all their wishes even if they have to work twice as hard which in return may harm their health, by working multiple jobs people have a messy sleep schedule which in return is eating at them.I agree with this to some extent as everyone has wishes and desires especially when you are young. They argue you will eventually die so why save the money?

In my opinion you should save money but to an extent. If you like something and wish to purchase it then save up and then buy it. Spending recklessly whether you are young or older is a bad habit . I think people should save toward a goal for example if i want the new iphone i should start saving for it then buy it when i have the full amount in my bank account rather then maxing out credit cards which will put me in a repeated cycle. savings should be for trips for the things which give you joy because if you work hard then rewarding yourself is not too bad.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout the response regarding whether everyone, including young people, should save money. The viewpoint is supported with relevant ideas and personal insights, such as discussing consumerism among youth and the dangers of credit card debt. However, some ideas tend to over-generalise and could be extended further with deeper explanations or more robust examples. For instance, the counter-argument regarding living life to the fullest is introduced but lacks sufficient expansion before pivoting back to the writer's opinion. Overall, the task is handled adequately, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6, leaning towards Band 6 due to under-developed support in places.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement, and the student's stance is identifiable across the paragraphs. However, paragraphing is somewhat irregular and incomplete; for instance, the introductory text runs together awkwardly, and punctuation issues like missing spacing after periods disrupt the flow. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or overused, notably the repetitive use of phrases like 'which in return' and 'and then later'. Referencing and transitions between paragraphs could be smoother to enhance the logical progression of ideas. While the overall structure is discernible, these mechanical faults and occasional cohesion issues align best with a Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'lavish things', 'unnecessary expenditure', and 'recklessly spend'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('unnessecary') and awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'get by the month' instead of 'get through the month'. Word boundary issues are also present due to a lack of spacing after punctuation. While communication is never impeded and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, the presence of frequent minor lexical and mechanical errors restricts the score to a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to construct multi-clause sentences. However, control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is weak, resulting in heavy run-on sentences, such as the lengthy explanation of credit card debt in the second paragraph. There are also frequent punctuation errors, including missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and a complete absence of spaces after full stops and commas. Grammatical errors, though they rarely impede overall communication, occur with enough frequency across complex structures to prevent the text from reaching a Band 7. It comfortably meets the criteria for Band 6.
