Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely believed that it is important for everyone including youngsters, to save money for their future. I strongly agree with this notion because savings would be effective for young people to get higher education and to deal with sudden challenges.

To begin with, the primary benefit for young people to save money is that it enables them to gain admission in their preferred university. This is because university education is very expensive and parents with lower salaries may not be able to afford the university fees. For example, in Pakistan, many students want to study in University of lumps which is very expensive. As a result, savings help students to get admission in their preferred university. Therefore, young people also save money, so they can fulfil their dreams in future.

Furthermore, another significant advantage for people to save money is that it could help them in difficult times. This is largely because many problems come suddenly in life and people have to face such problems on their own. For example, if someone diagnosed with heart problem, he would be able to treat his problem with money.

As a result, people save money as it helps them to overcome some serious problems of life.

Nevertheless, some people believed that saving money would cause depression and anxiety. This is due to people will not enjoy their life to fullest, if they save money. However, this problem could be solved through adopting some useful strategies, such as careful spendings.

In conclusion, although saving money would cause depression and anxiety, I believe that there are more advantages of saving money are more because it helps to overcome difficult situations in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position on whether young people should save money for their future. The response puts forward two distinct main body arguments: funding higher education and managing sudden life challenges. These ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning university expenses in Pakistan. However, some arguments tend to be a bit repetitive and under-developed, falling short of the extended exploration needed for a Band 7. For instance, the example about a heart problem is quite brief. Nevertheless, the main position remains clear throughout the essay, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The student uses basic cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical. For instance, the sentence 'Therefore, young people also save money, so they can fulfil their dreams in future' feels repetitive and disrupts the smooth progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate main ideas, but the logical flow between sentences could be refined. These features place the response solidly at Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task. There are attempts to use less common items and subject-specific vocabulary, such as 'preferred university', 'depression and anxiety', and 'careful spendings'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'gain admission in' (instead of 'gain admission to'), 'someone diagnosed with heart problem' (missing an article), and 'spendings' (which should be 'spending'). Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, corresponding to a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Complex structures are attempted through conditional and subordinate clauses, such as 'This is because university education is very expensive...' and 'if someone diagnosed with heart problem...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and omissions, such as missing articles ('if someone [was] diagnosed with [a] heart problem') and awkward phrasing ('advantages of saving money are more because'). Punctuation is generally fine, but the grammatical mistakes mean that errors are present throughout, restricting the score to a Band 6.
