It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often argued that everyone, including young people, should save money for their future. **I strongly agree with this view**, because cultivating the habit of saving from an early age provides financial security, promotes independence and makes significant long-term goals more attainable. Nevertheless, young people should not be expected to sacrifice all present enjoyment for the sake of future financial stability.
One compelling reason for saving is that it provides a **financial safety net against unforeseen circumstances**. Unexpected unemployment, medical expenses or urgent family responsibilities can place considerable pressure on an individual who has no savings. By setting aside even a modest proportion of their income, young people can gradually accumulate sufficient funds to cope with such difficulties without resorting to borrowing. For example, a young employee who consistently saves part of their salary could cover several months of essential expenses if they unexpectedly lost their job. **Not only does this reduce financial vulnerability, but it also fosters a sense of independence and responsibility.**
Furthermore, saving from an early age can help people achieve **substantial long-term objectives**. Purchasing a property, pursuing higher education or establishing a business often requires considerable capital. Young people have the advantage of time, allowing relatively small and regular contributions to grow into a significant sum. In addition, learning to budget effectively can discourage impulsive spending and develop sound financial habits that remain valuable throughout adulthood.
However, saving should not become an excessive priority. Young people may reasonably spend some of their income on travel, hobbies, education and social experiences, which can contribute to personal development and well-being. The appropriate balance will also depend on individual income and circumstances.
**In conclusion, I strongly agree that young people should save for the future.** Financial preparation offers protection against unexpected difficulties and facilitates major life goals, although it should be balanced with reasonable expenditure on present needs and experiences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear, well-developed position throughout the essay. The introduction establishes a strong stance, which is systematically supported by well-reasoned arguments in the body paragraphs. For instance, the discussion on financial safety nets and long-term objectives is extended with relevant explanations and examples, such as how a young employee can manage unexpected unemployment. Furthermore, the writer acknowledges a counter-perspective regarding the balance between saving and present enjoyment, which adds depth and nuance to the overall argument. Ideas are fully developed without tangents, meeting the criteria for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Ideas are logically sequenced, and there is a clear progression of thought throughout the essay. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the safety net argument, moving to long-term objectives, acknowledging a balanced view, and concluding effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For example', and 'Nevertheless' are used accurately and flexibly without feeling mechanical. Paragraphing is managed skilfully, ensuring that distinct points are appropriately separated and developed.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
The student demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suitable for an academic response.
