Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that everyone, including young people, should save money for the future. I strongly agree with this view, because developing sound financial habits at an early age can provide greater security, reduce dependence on borrowing and make important long-term goals more achievable. Nevertheless, saving should be balanced with reasonable spending on present needs and experiences.

The most compelling reason for saving is that it provides a financial safety net against unforeseen circumstances. Unemployment, medical expenses and other emergencies can arise without warning, and those without savings may have little choice but to borrow money. By consistently setting aside even a modest proportion of their income, young people can gradually build a reserve that enables them to cope with such difficulties independently. For example, a young employee who saves part of their salary each month could rely on these funds to cover essential expenses during a period of unemployment. Moreover, this habit cultivates financial discipline and encourages people to distinguish between necessities and unnecessary expenditure.

Saving is also essential for achieving substantial long-term objectives. Buying a home, pursuing higher education or establishing a business generally requires considerable capital. Since young people have many years ahead of them, regular contributions can accumulate into a significant sum over time. In addition, learning to budget effectively at an early age can help individuals manage larger financial commitments responsibly later in life.

That said, young people should not devote all their income to savings. Spending on education, travel, hobbies and social activities can enhance personal development and well-being. The sensible approach is therefore to allocate money carefully between current expenditure and future financial security.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that everyone, including young people, should save for the future. Although present enjoyment is important, establishing a consistent saving habit offers protection against financial uncertainty and provides a practical foundation for achieving major life goals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear, well-supported position that young people should save money for the future. The introduction clearly states the writer's stance ('I strongly agree with this view') and outlines key supporting arguments. Each body paragraph develops a distinct, relevant point: protection against emergencies, funding long-term goals, and balancing saving with present needs. Ideas are well-extended with appropriate explanations and relevant examples, such as 'a young employee who saves part of their salary each month'. The conclusion neatly restates the main position. Overall, the task is completely and effectively fulfilled, fitting the Band 8 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the main thesis to specific supportive arguments, a nuanced counter-balance paragraph, and finally a concise conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central theme. Cohesive devices are managed well without being overly mechanical, using linking words and phrases such as 'Nevertheless', 'The most compelling reason', 'Moreover', and 'That said' to guide the reader seamlessly through the argument. Referencing is clear and precise throughout the entire text, demonstrating strong control over overall coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The student demonstrates a wide, flexible, and natural lexical resource suitable for an academic essay. Uncommon lexical items are used skillfully and appropriately, such as 'financial safety net', 'unforeseen circumstances', 'financial discipline', and 'financial uncertainty'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate and sophisticated (e.g., 'distinguish between necessities and unnecessary expenditure', 'accumulate into a significant sum'). There are only occasional minor inaccuracies, but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary allows the writer to convey precise meanings smoothly, comfortably aligning with the Band 8 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response exhibits a wide range of grammatical structures used with a high degree of flexibility and accuracy. The writer successfully employs both complex and compound sentences, such as conditional ideas, relative clauses, and participial phrases (e.g., 'Since young people have many years ahead of them, regular contributions can accumulate...'). The majority of sentences are entirely error-free, and control of grammar and punctuation is consistently strong. Minor slips are virtually absent, and the grammatical execution comfortably meets the criteria for Band 8.
