Student answer (Band 7.5)
Many people believe that saving money is essential for everyone, including young individuals, as it helps ensure financial security in the future. I strongly agree with this statement because saving develops good financial habits and provides protection against unexpected difficulties.
One important reason why young people should save money is that it helps them develop responsible financial behavior. By setting aside a portion of their income regularly, they learn valuable skills such as budgeting, planning, and self-discipline. These habits can prevent excessive spending and debt later in life. For example, a university student who saves part of a part-time salary may become more conscious of personal expenses and better prepared to manage finances after graduation.
Another significant benefit of saving is that it provides financial security during emergencies. Life is often unpredictable, and unexpected events such as medical expenses, job loss, or urgent repairs can occur at any time. Individuals who have savings are better equipped to deal with such situations without relying heavily on loans or credit cards. Furthermore, money saved at a young age can contribute to long-term goals, including higher education, purchasing a home, or starting a business.
Some people argue that young people should spend their earnings on experiences and personal development rather than saving. While there is some truth in this view, saving and spending are not mutually exclusive. Young individuals can enjoy their lives while still putting aside a reasonable amount of money for the future. Maintaining a balance between present enjoyment and future security is often the most practical approach.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that everyone, especially young people, should save money for the future. Saving not only encourages responsible financial habits but also provides protection against unforeseen circumstances and helps individuals achieve important long-term goals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear position ('I strongly agree') and sustaining it throughout the essay. The writer explores multiple dimensions of the issue, including the development of responsible financial behavior, protection against unforeseen emergencies, and the role of savings in achieving long-term goals such as higher education or purchasing a home. Furthermore, the counter-argument regarding spending on experiences is successfully addressed and refuted by suggesting a balanced approach. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as a university student managing a part-time salary, aligning strongly with the Band 8 criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct main idea, such as financial habits, emergency security, and balancing saving with spending. Cohesive devices are used naturally and flexibly without being overly mechanical (e.g., 'By setting aside', 'Furthermore', 'While there is some truth in this view'). Referencing throughout the essay is clear and precise, ensuring that the relationships between ideas are always apparent to the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student employs a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary relevant to the topic of personal finance. Words and phrases such as 'financial security', 'excessive spending', 'unpredictable', 'mutually exclusive', and 'unforeseen circumstances' demonstrate a good command of lexical items and collocations. While there are very few truly uncommon or idiomatic lexical items, the vocabulary used is precise, natural, and allows the writer to convey complex ideas clearly and fluently, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response exhibits a wide range of grammatical structures, successfully blending simple and complex sentences. The writer skillfully uses subordinate clauses, participial phrases ('By setting aside a portion of their income regularly'), and modal verbs ('can occur', 'should save'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled with a high degree of control. Minor slips are virtually absent, and grammatical inaccuracies do not occur at all in the text, reflecting a strong command that merits an 8.0 score.
