Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is undeniable that saving money is important for the future for people of all age groups. In this regard, it is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future. I agree to a large extent with this notion due to many reasons, which will be outlined in the following paragraphs with a logical conclusion.

To commence with, there are several reasons for young people to save money. Firstly, financial stability is an important reason. To explain, people may face many unexpected situations, such as medical expenses, loss of a job, and other emergencies. If they have some savings, they can deal with these situations without borrowing money from anyone. Secondly, saving money can help young people achieve their goals. To clarify, some people save money for their future because they want to achieve their long-term goals. Young people may have a dream of opening their own business. By making small efforts to save money, they can gradually build enough funds to achieve their goals. Moreover, saving money helps young people develop good financial management skills. To justify this, saving from a young age helps people develop financial responsibility. When young people learn to control unnecessary spending and save a portion of their income, they become better at managing money. This habit can benefit them when they start working and earning a regular income. As a result, saving money from a young age can be beneficial for young people.

However, there are several drawbacks to this notion. First and foremost, young people often have limited income. In other words, many young people are students or have part-time jobs, so their income is relatively low. They may need to spend money on personal development, education, or leisure activities, which can make it difficult for them to save a significant amount of money.

In conclusion, although there are several benefits of saving money, such as achieving financial stability, reaching personal goals, and developing financial management skills, the drawbacks of this notion cannot be completely neglected.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing largely with the statement while also acknowledging opposing views. Ideas are extended and supported appropriately, such as mentioning medical emergencies, long-term business goals, and financial responsibility. The main arguments are relevant and well-developed throughout the body paragraphs, although the conclusion could have been slightly more expansive in summarizing the final stance. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of Band 7 by addressing all parts of the prompt with a clear position and well-supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately, dividing the introduction, body arguments, counterarguments, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as "To commence with", "Firstly", "Secondly", and "Moreover", although some transitional phrases like "To explain", "To clarify", and "To justify this" feel a bit mechanical and repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, resulting in a cohesive flow that meets the Band 6 to 7 criteria, leaning towards 6.5 or a solid 6 due to the somewhat formulaic linking phrases.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms like "financial stability", "unexpected situations", "long-term goals", and "financial management skills". There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is repetitive, such as the constant reuse of "young people" and "save money". Minor lexical choices are generally appropriate, and spelling is accurate throughout, allowing communication to proceed smoothly without hindrance, fitting the Band 6 descriptors well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures effectively (e.g., "When young people learn to control unnecessary spending..."). There are some recurring patterns in sentence openings and occasional minor awkwardness, but the grammatical structures are generally controlled well. Errors in grammar and punctuation are rare and do not impede communication at all. The control over sentence construction points toward a solid Band 7 rating.
