Student answer (Band 7.5)
Financial security is a growing concern in an increasingly unpredictable world, and I firmly believe that developing the habit of saving money is essential for people of all ages, not merely those approaching retirement. This essay will examine two key reasons why early and consistent saving benefits individuals throughout their lives.
Firstly, life is inherently unpredictable, and unforeseen circumstances such as sudden illness, job loss, or family emergencies can arise at any stage of life. Without a financial cushion, even a minor setback can spiral into a serious crisis. For instance, a university student who sets aside a small portion of their monthly allowance may be far better equipped to handle an unexpected expense, such as a medical bill or a broken laptop needed for coursework, than one who spends every rupee as soon as it is received. In this sense, saving acts as a safety net that protects individuals from financial vulnerability.
Secondly, saving from a young age instils discipline and helps people achieve long-term goals that would otherwise remain out of reach. Major life milestones, such as pursuing higher education, purchasing a home, or starting a business, typically require substantial capital that is rarely available through income alone. A young professional who consistently saves a fixed percentage of their salary, for example, is likely to accumulate enough funds within a decade to make a significant investment, whereas someone who postpones saving until later in life often struggles to catch up. Moreover, the habits formed early tend to persist, meaning that young savers are more likely to remain financially responsible adults.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that saving money is important for people of every age, as it provides protection against life's uncertainties while also enabling individuals to realise their future ambitions. Rather than viewing saving as a burden reserved for later life, young people should be encouraged to adopt this habit as early as possible, since the long-term benefits far outweigh any short-term sacrifice.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The candidate fully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and well-developed position on whether everyone, including young people, should save money for the future. The response is fully articulated with relevant supporting ideas. For example, the writer outlines the necessity of financial cushions for unforeseen circumstances, such as medical emergencies or broken laptops, and details how saving early aids in achieving long-term goals like pursuing higher education or purchasing a home. The ideas are extended and supported logically throughout the essay, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the prompt. The position is maintained consistently from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the final conclusion, meeting all requirements for a high band score under this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Ideas are effectively sequenced, starting with an introduction that outlines two key reasons, followed by distinct body paragraphs introduced by cohesive markers such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', and concluded with a summarizing final paragraph. Cohesive devices are managed well without being overly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct, well-developed sub-theme. Referencing and substitution are handled smoothly, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of arguments from the safety net aspect to long-term goals and discipline.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The candidate demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic context. Less common lexical items are used skillfully and naturally, such as 'financial cushion', 'unforeseen circumstances', 'financial vulnerability', and 'substantial capital'. Word choice and collocations are generally precise, as seen in phrases like 'persist' and 'accumulate enough funds'. There are only occasional minor inaccuracies, but these do not impede communication or detract from the sophisticated flow of ideas. The lexical range comfortably satisfies the requirements for a high band score, showing both breadth and precision in discussing economic and personal finance topics.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The candidate utilizes a wide range of complex grammatical structures with a high degree of flexibility and accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, featuring sophisticated subordination and relative clauses, such as in the sentence 'A young professional who consistently saves a fixed percentage of their salary, for example, is likely to accumulate enough funds...' Punctuation is handled accurately throughout, and control over verb tenses, modal verbs, and agreement is consistently strong. Only very occasional minor slips occur, which are entirely typical of high-level performance and do not affect the clarity or precision of the message being conveyed.
