Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly taking a position that saving money for the future is important, particularly for young people, and supports this view with relevant ideas such as security during emergencies and funding major investments. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the discussion on buying a house or car touches on valuable management and penny-by-penny savings, but the explanation could be extended further. Despite this, all parts of the task are addressed with a clear overall focus. This aligns well with the requirements for Band 6.5 or 6, so a band score of 6.0 is awarded because ideas are generally relevant and supported, though some areas require deeper elaboration.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, such as emergency funds versus major investments. Cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'Consequently' are used to connect ideas, though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or simplistic. For example, the transition into the conclusion reads 'In the conclusion', which is a bit formulaic. However, the logical progression is maintained throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the writer's argument without confusion. This fits the Band 6 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'commercial area', 'luxurious house', and 'valueable management'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'smal amount' (spelling), 'purchases' instead of 'purchased', 'sudden attacked' instead of 'suddenly attacked', and 'valueable' (spelling). Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas effectively without impeding the reader's understanding. This performance corresponds to a Band 5.5, reflecting a mix of adequate everyday vocabulary and attempts at less common words marred by regular errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure with relative clauses and conditional-like ideas. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('big investments requires'), article misuse ('a big amount of money'), word form errors ('purchases from monthly or annual pay can be save'), and tense inconsistencies ('Bad times did not knock'). While these errors are noticeable and require the reader to occasionally re-read, they rarely completely impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and frequent errors places the grammar firmly at a Band 5.0.
