Student answer (Band 6.5)

Saving money for the future is an important habit for people of all ages. Although the reasons for saving may vary from person to person, I strongly agree that everyone, including young people, should save money because it can help them achieve their future goals and deal with unexpected financial difficulties.

The first reason to save money is to achieve personal goals in life. For example, if a young person is ambitious and wants to improve his lifestyle in the future, he can save money to invest in a business, buy a house, or purchase a car. Saving from an early age can make these goals more achievable because a person does not have to depend entirely on loans or other people for financial support. Although older people may have fewer long-term ambitions, they can still save money for important purposes such as healthcare, retirement, or supporting their families.

The second reason to save money is to prepare for unexpected situations that may occur in life. For instance, if a person's house is damaged by a fire, he may suddenly need a large amount of money to find accommodation and provide basic necessities for his family. Having some savings can help him deal with such an unfortunate situation without becoming financially dependent on others. Similarly, older people should also keep some money aside for unexpected medical expenses or other emergencies. Therefore, savings can provide financial security when people face difficult circumstances.

In conclusion, saving money is important for everyone, regardless of their age or circumstances. It can help people achieve their future goals and provide financial support during unexpected situations. Therefore, I strongly agree that everyone, including young people, should develop the habit of saving money for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. The response presents two distinct, well-supported reasons why everyone, including young people, should save money: achieving personal goals and preparing for unexpected situations. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as investing in a business or dealing with a house damaged by fire. The arguments are well-developed and directly respond to the prompt's question regarding the extent of agreement with the statement. There are no omissions or tangential arguments, demonstrating a clear understanding of the academic task requirements. Therefore, the response comfortably aligns with the Band 7 descriptors for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, introduced clearly in the opening sentences using phrases like 'The first reason to save money' and 'The second reason to save money'. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'For example', and 'Similarly' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion logically. While the cohesive mechanisms are functional and clear, they occasionally follow a somewhat predictable formula rather than demonstrating the more flexible, sophisticated referencing characteristic of a higher band. Consequently, the writing meets the criteria for Band 7 in Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some precision when discussing financial concepts. Examples of appropriate vocabulary include 'financial security', 'long-term ambitions', 'unexpected situations', and 'basic necessities'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'depend entirely on loans' and 'financially dependent'. However, the vocabulary tends to be somewhat safe and repetitive rather than truly wide or flexible; words like 'money', 'save', and 'future' recur frequently without much stylistic variation. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. This balanced performance firmly places the lexical resource at a Band 6.5, rounded to 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures and subordinate clauses effectively, as seen in 'if a young person is ambitious and wants to improve his lifestyle in the future, he can save money to invest in a business'. There is a high degree of grammatical accuracy, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are well-managed throughout the text. Although complex structures are attempted and generally controlled, the range of grammatical patterns is somewhat standard and lacks the wider structural flexibility required for the higher bands. Minor slips are virtually absent, showing a strong command of basic and intermediate grammar. Thus, a Band 7.0 is awarded for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
