Student answer (Band 6.5)

Saving money for the future is an important habit for people of all ages. Although the reasons for saving may vary from person to person, I strongly agree that everyone, including young people, should save money because it can help them achieve their future goals and deal with unexpected financial difficulties.

The first reason to save money is to achieve personal goals in life. For example, if a young person is ambitious and wants to improve his lifestyle in the future, he can save money to invest in a business, buy a house, or purchase a car. Saving from an early age can make these goals more achievable because a person does not have to depend entirely on loans or other people for financial support. Although older people may have fewer long-term ambitions, they can still save money for important purposes such as healthcare, retirement, or supporting their families.

The second reason to save money is to prepare for unexpected situations that may occur in life. For instance, if a person's house is damaged by a fire, he may suddenly need a large amount of money to find accommodation and provide basic necessities for his family. Having some savings can help him deal with such an unfortunate situation without becoming financially dependent on others. Similarly, older people should also keep some money aside for unexpected medical expenses or other emergencies. Therefore, savings can provide financial security when people face difficult circumstances.

In conclusion, saving money is important for everyone, regardless of their age or circumstances. It can help people achieve their future goals and provide financial support during unexpected situations. Therefore, I strongly agree that everyone, including young people, should develop the habit of saving money for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear and well-developed stance that everyone, including young people, should save money. The writer outlines two distinct main reasons: achieving personal goals and preparing for unexpected situations. Each body paragraph presents a clear central idea that is extended and supported with relevant examples, such as investing in a business, buying a house, or dealing with property damage from a fire. The position is maintained consistently throughout the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Ideas are logically grouped and fully explored, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7 or Band 8 response. However, because the examples are somewhat standard and could be further elaborated for maximum depth, a solid Band 7.0 is awarded for strong task coverage and clear positioning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the introduction through to the conclusion. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, with the first body paragraph addressing personal goals and the second focusing on unexpected emergencies. Cohesive devices are used effectively and transparently, such as 'The first reason to save money is...', 'The second reason to save money is...', and 'Similarly'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. While the cohesive devices are clear, they are at times slightly formulaic rather than fully integrated in a sophisticated manner, which places this text firmly within the Band 7 category for logical sequencing and clear overall progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow flexibility and precision, successfully discussing the topic of personal finance. Words and phrases such as 'ambitious', 'financial support', 'unexpected situations', and 'financial security' demonstrate an adequate control of common and less common lexical items. There is a clear awareness of collocation, and spelling and word choice are accurate throughout the text. While the vocabulary is appropriate and clearly communicates the writer's ideas, it lacks the more sophisticated, uncommon lexical items and idiomatic control required to reach a Band 8. Therefore, a Band 7.0 accurately reflects the competent and precise use of vocabulary shown here.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and concessive clauses such as 'Although the reasons for saving may vary...' and 'if a young person is ambitious and wants to improve...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. Grammar and punctuation control is strong, with only minor lapses if any, demonstrating good control over complex sentence forms. The frequent error-free sentences and the variety of structures used comfortably satisfy the criteria for a Band 7.0, showing a high level of grammatical accuracy.
