Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether young people should save money, considering both the advantages of financial security and the counter-arguments regarding enjoying youth. The main ideas are generally relevant, such as improving living standards and the constraints of aging, though some points are slightly under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the discussion on welfare and facilities is stated broadly without concrete examples. The position is maintained throughout the essay, leading to a balanced conclusion. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors, as all parts of the task are addressed and a relevant position is presented, but idea extension and support remain somewhat limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, body paragraphs with opposing views, and conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Phrases used to signal progression, such as 'To commence with', 'To clarify that', and 'In other words', are sometimes awkward or inaccurately applied. Referencing and linking are occasionally unclear, particularly with transitional phrases like 'due to when they grow older' and 'Owing to they should look after their children'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion lacks smooth transitions. This fits the Band 5 descriptors, where there is some organization and paragraphing, but cohesive devices are inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'paramount aspect', 'financial planning', and 'plethora of facilities'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, incorrect word forms, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'stabilty' instead of stability, 'standared' instead of standard, 'band account' instead of bank account, 'seccession' instead of succession, and 'indluge' instead of indulge. These errors do not entirely impede communication, but they recur frequently. This performance reflects the Band 5 criteria, demonstrating a limited but minimally adequate range with noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses. However, control over grammar is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, preposition usage, and clause connection. Examples include 'that contribute significantly' (subject-verb agreement), 'due to when they grow older', 'assuming do not have', and 'can not as energetic'. Capitalization and comma spacing errors are also prevalent throughout. While the meaning is usually retrievable, the high frequency of grammatical mistakes means that error-free sentences are scarce. This corresponds to the Band 5 descriptors, featuring a limited range of structures where attempts at complex sentences are often faulty and frequent errors cause difficulty.
