IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is widely believed that people should save money for the future, including young individuals. I strongly agree with this fact because people may experience any kind of difficulties, including health issues, employment loss, or financial crisis. We will discuss the benefits and

and the demerits of saving money for the future.

One significant advantage of saving money is that it reduces people's mental pressure because people can face serious health issues, such as a heart attack or a stroke. As a result, they need a lot of money for better treatment. For instance, workers may lose their employment without a notice period. If they have a minimum of six months' expenses in savings, it may be better to survive until they find a new job.

On the other hand, some people argue that people should seize the day because some people save their monthly wages for critical times or for their children. Eventually, they may lead a very ordinary life and pass away without fulfilling their desire or dream. For this reason, it could be better to enjoy one's own life with one's salary. However, people may take out a loan from the bank in case of any danger; it could be easier to pay the loan than to save the salary. Moreover, people should enjoy their lives with their own assets. So people should use their money for their needs, rather than saving for their heirs.

In conclusion, saving money for one's future has some crucial merits, including health issues or any financial difficulties; it also has some disadvantages. I believe the significance of saving money for the future will outweigh its demerits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position agreeing with the prompt. The response introduces relevant ideas such as mental pressure relief, unexpected health crises, and job loss. However, the introduction contains a plan that introduces some confusion by mentioning 'the benefits and the demerits' of saving money, which slightly contradicts the writer's strong agreement stance. Furthermore, the counter-argument paragraph introduces ideas about enjoying life and taking bank loans, but the development is somewhat disjointed and contradictory in places. Overall, the ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, but the task response is slightly limited by inconsistent argumentation, placing this at a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the repetition of 'people' excessively throughout the paragraphs creates a repetitive feel rather than smooth referencing. Paragraphing is used adequately, but logical progression within the third paragraph is occasionally hindered by abrupt shifts between enjoying life now, taking bank loans, and passing on inheritance. This aligns with the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task. Words and phrases such as 'financial crisis', 'employment loss', 'mental pressure', and 'seize the day' are successfully deployed. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'employment loss' instead of 'job loss' or 'unemployment', and the phrase 'pass away without fulfilling their desire or dream'. There is also a heavy reliance on basic vocabulary, with the noun 'people' repeated constantly throughout the text instead of utilizing synonyms. While communication is not impeded, the lack of flexibility and precision limits the score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditionals ('If they have a minimum...') and subordinate clauses effectively. There are several instances of good grammatical control, but also recurring errors in punctuation and sentence construction, such as the run-on structure in 'However, people may take out a loan from the bank in case of any danger; it could be easier to pay the loan than to save the salary.' Moreover, awkward phrasings like 'including health issues' used in the conclusion to describe merits demonstrate minor grammatical and collocation lapses. These errors do not impede communication, matching the Band 6 descriptor.
