Student answer (Band 6.0)

Whether young people should save money or not has been the topic of debate for the past few decades. Some people strongly believe that saving money is a good habit that must be taught to children at a young age. However, many people think that children and youngsters should enjoy without worrying for saving money. This essay will critically analyse both arguments with relevant examples and justifications.

It is observed that adults who are in their 30s tend to be more serious towards saving money than youngsters. This is probably because individuals in young age are reluctant about future. They are not farsighted and love to enjoy the present. However, this essential habit is helpful for both. If a person saves money today, then it will help him tomorrow in case of difficulty or financial crisis.

Individuals in their 20s can easily learn and unlearn things. The concepts learnt in this age are likely to be remembered by them throughout their lives. It has been proved by science that individuals in their early years tend to be more adaptable than those in their 30s because in early years, their opinions and habits are not yet firmly established. Hence this is the best time to teach new things and develop new habits.

In my opinion, not only does saving money prove helpful for future but it also makes a person concious about his matters and develops a sense of responsibility in him towards future. Youngsters should be taught about financial management at a young age so that they understand the value of money and do not spend it on useless occassions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal position in the conclusion. The ideas presented are generally relevant, such as the adaptability of young minds and the benefits of financial security. However, the development is somewhat limited, as the analysis remains relatively general without specific personal examples or deeply explored consequences. For instance, the discussion on why young people are reluctant about the future is touched upon briefly but not fully extended. The prompt asks to what extent you agree or disagree, and while the writer clearly leans towards agreeing, the introductory paragraph states the essay will 'critically analyse both arguments,' which slightly misaligns with a traditional discursive essay structure where a single-side or nuanced stance is maintained throughout. Nevertheless, the task is adequately addressed, aligning with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding stance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the behavioural traits of young adults in paragraph two and psychological adaptability in paragraph three. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or repetitive, relying on standard transitional phrases like 'However,' and 'Hence' to link thoughts. Referencing is generally clear, though phrases such as 'helpful for both' in the second paragraph lack a precisely defined antecedent. The progression of ideas flows reasonably well, but the overall mechanical nature of cohesive devices places this response comfortably at a Band 6.0 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'reluctant,' 'farsighted,' 'adaptable,' and 'financial management.' There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by slight inaccuracies in word choice or spelling, such as 'concious' instead of 'conscious' and 'occassions' instead of 'occasions' or 'circumstances.' Collocations are mostly acceptable, but phrases like 'enjoy without worrying for saving money' feel slightly awkward and unnatural. The lexical range is sufficient to communicate meaning clearly without significant impediment, making a Band 6.0 score appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('If a person saves money today, then it will help him tomorrow') and relative clauses. There is a reasonable level of grammatical control, and many sentences are accurate. However, errors in grammar and punctuation do occur, such as missing articles ('in young age' instead of 'at a young age') and preposition misuse ('worrying for saving' instead of 'worrying about saving'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the essay from achieving a higher band score. The variety of structures combined with frequent error-free basic sentences aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
