It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future. I strongly agree with this statement because saving money can provide financial security and help people achieve their future goals.

Firstly, saving money is important because it can help people deal with unexpected situations. Life can be unpredictable, and people may suddenly need money for medical treatment, education, or repairing their home or vehicle. If a person has some savings, they can manage these situations without borrowing money from others. For example, a young person who regularly saves a small amount from their income can build an emergency fund over time. This can reduce financial stress when an unexpected expense occurs.

Secondly, saving from a young age can help people achieve their long-term goals. Young people may want to buy a house, start a business, travel abroad, or pay for higher education. These goals usually require a large amount of money, so it is difficult to achieve them without proper planning. For instance, a student who saves part of their part-time income may eventually have enough money to pay for a professional course or other educational expenses.

However, I believe young people should not save every penny. They should also spend a reasonable amount on their education, hobbies and social activities because these experiences are also important for a balanced life. The main point is to develop a habit of saving while avoiding unnecessary spending.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that everyone, especially young people, should save money for the future. Regular saving can provide financial security and make it easier to achieve important goals in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and well-developed position on whether everyone, including young people, should save money. The writer presents a clear stance in the introduction ('I strongly agree with this statement') and maintains this position throughout the essay. Main ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as building an emergency fund for unexpected situations and funding long-term goals like education or travel. The inclusion of a concession paragraph ('However, I believe young people should not save every penny') adds nuance and balance to the discussion, demonstrating good task awareness without detracting from the overall position. The ideas are fully supported and appropriate for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to the introduction, two supporting points, a counter-perspective/concession, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Referencing is generally clear, for example, using 'This can reduce financial stress' to link back to the previous sentence. Although the cohesive devices are somewhat standard, they are used flexibly and contribute to a coherent overall arrangement that meets the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, enabling clear communication of ideas. Words and phrases such as 'financial security', 'unpredictable', 'emergency fund', and 'long-term goals' show a good grasp of topic-specific language. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items with general success, although some phrasing leans slightly towards repetitive or common collocations (e.g., 'save money', 'spend a reasonable amount'). Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout, and while the vocabulary is not expansive enough to reach Band 8, it comfortably satisfies the criteria for Band 6.5, rounding to a solid 7.0 given the precision and lack of major lexical errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. The writer successfully incorporates subordinate clauses and conditional elements, such as 'If a person has some savings, they can manage these situations...' and '...a young person who regularly saves a small amount...'. Punctuation and sentence boundary demarcation are accurate. While there are no major grammatical errors that impede communication, the variety of complex structures is somewhat standard rather than fully flexible, which keeps the score at a reliable Band 6.5 to 7.0 range. Frequent error-free sentences support the assignment of Band 7.
