Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position of strong agreement with the statement that saving money is important for young people and everyone else. The candidate attempts to develop ideas by discussing the benefits of savings during emergencies and for starting a small business, as seen in the example of the bakery shop. However, the development lacks depth and suffers from sudden shifts in perspective, particularly in the third paragraph where the counterargument is introduced somewhat abruptly and confusingly. Some ideas are repetitive or under-developed. Nevertheless, the main task requirements are met with a clear overall stance, fitting the criteria for a Band 5.5 or Band 6.0. Given the fully articulated viewpoint despite some organizational and developmental gaps, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a basic overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, though paragraphing and transitions are frequently mechanical or faulty. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, as seen with phrases like 'Firstly, I would like to explain about benefits' and 'On the other hand, there are few arguments that all people never agree with savings'. Referencing is also unclear in places, such as switching abruptly between first-person pronouns ('my own benefits', 'my bakery shop') and general statements about people and youngsters. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical progression within paragraphs is disrupted by confusing transitions. These features align with the Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'controversial issue', 'future prospects', 'substantial escalation', and 'accumulated cash'. However, there are numerous inappropriate word choices, awkward collocations, and grammatical forms of words, such as 'protect your cash for later periods', 'resources diminished', 'with these capital', and 'small business with their accumulated cash'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical errors and awkward phrasing occur frequently, sometimes causing mild confusion for the reader. This places the lexical performance firmly at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although everyone in our society would enjoy these funds when there is certain challenges in life.' However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and articles. Examples include 'This statement is a controversial issue today whether it is...', 'there is certain savings which can be utilized', 'Adults can start there small business', and 'It portrays favourable role that to save money...'. Punctuation and phrasing errors also occur regularly. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, the writing corresponds to Band 5.0.
