Student answer (Band 7.0)
Many people believe that saving money is essential for everyone, including young individuals, as it helps ensure financial security in the future. I strongly agree with this statement because saving develops good financial habits and provides protection against unexpected difficulties.
One important reason why young people should save money is that it helps them develop responsible financial behavior. By setting aside a portion of their income regularly, they learn valuable skills such as budgeting, planning, and self-discipline. These habits can prevent excessive spending and debt later in life. For example, a university student who saves part of a part-time salary may become more conscious of personal expenses and better prepared to manage finances after graduation.
Another significant benefit of saving is that it provides financial security during emergencies. Life is often unpredictable, and unexpected events such as medical expenses, job loss, or urgent repairs can occur at any time. Individuals who have savings are better equipped to deal with such situations without relying heavily on loans or credit cards. Furthermore, money saved at a young age can contribute to long-term goals, including higher education, purchasing a home, or starting a business.
Some people argue that young people should spend their earnings on experiences and personal development rather than saving. While there is some truth in this view, saving and spending are not mutually exclusive. Young individuals can enjoy their lives while still putting aside a reasonable amount of money for the future. Maintaining a balance between present enjoyment and future security is often the most practical approach.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that everyone, especially young people, should save money for the future. Saving not only encourages responsible financial habits but also provides protection against unforeseen circumstances and helps individuals achieve important long-term goals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a strong position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. The student presents well-developed ideas regarding financial responsibility and emergency security. For example, in the second paragraph, the argument is supported effectively with a clear example of a university student managing a part-time salary. The counter-argument is also thoughtfully acknowledged and refuted in the fourth paragraph, which demonstrates a nuanced understanding of the prompt. Overall, the ideas are extended and supported appropriately, aligning well with the Band 8 descriptor for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the introduction, moving through two body paragraphs supporting the thesis, addressing a counter-argument, and concluding effectively. Cohesive devices are used naturally and flexibly, such as 'By setting aside', 'Furthermore', and 'While there is some truth in this view'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the flow of arguments. Although cohesion is very competent, it occasionally relies on standard connectors rather than the utterly seamless transitions characteristic of a Band 9, making a Band 8 score appropriate here.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally natural range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task. Phrases like 'financial security', 'responsible financial behavior', 'excessive spending', and 'mutually exclusive' show good control and precision. There are occasional attempts at less common lexical items, and word choice is generally accurate. While the vocabulary is effective and allows the message to be communicated clearly without noticeable strain, it does not consistently display the wide, flexible range of uncommon idiomatic or sophisticated terms required to reach a Band 8. Therefore, a solid Band 7 is awarded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writing exhibits a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional ideas, participial phrases ('By setting aside a portion of their income regularly...'), and subordinate clauses. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. There are very occasional minor slips, but control over grammar is strong and communication is never impeded. The grammatical command comfortably satisfies the criteria for Band 7, showing frequent error-free sentences and a solid mix of structures.
