Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today’s unpredictable world, financial security has become increasingly important. While some people believe that young individuals should spend their earnings on enjoying rather than saving, I strongly agree that everyone, regardless of age, should develop habit of saving their money for future. This essay will demonstrate the reasons for this view.

One of the main advantage of saving money is that it provides financial stability during unexpected situations. Emergencies such as medical expenses, job loss, economic recessions can occur without warning. Individuals who have built up savings are better prepared to cope with such challenges without relying on loan and financial assistance. For example, during covid 19 pandemic, many people who had emergency funds can be used for manage their living expenses despite losing their source of income.

Moreover, saving from young age encourages responsible financial habits. Learning to budget and distinguish between essential and unnecessary spendings helps young people to become financially disciplined adults. In addition money saved over long period of time can be invested, allowing it to grow a strong compound interest. This enables individuals to achieve their goals such that pursuing higher education, starting new business, or purchasing a new home without any financial pressure. Hence you can enjoy luxuries.

Admittedly, it is equally important for young people to enjoy their lives and invest on individuals and personality development. Although spending money on higher education, travel and skill exposure can enrich strong career advancement. Nevertheless, these objectives should not come at expense of neglecting financial planning. A balanced approach, where a portion of income is saved while the remainder is used wisely, a practical solution.

In conclusion, I firmly agree that saving money is very essential for people of all ages. It provides financial security, promotes discipline and help segment of individuals to achieve their goals while preparing them for unforeseen circumstances.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear stance and exploring both the reasons for saving and the importance of a balanced life for young people. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as referencing the COVID-19 pandemic to illustrate the need for emergency funds. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, and the main arguments regarding financial stability, discipline, and long-term goals are presented logically. The response meets the criteria for Band 7, as it addresses all parts of the prompt with a clear position and extends ideas effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs focusing on emergency funds, financial discipline, and a counter-perspective on enjoying youth, and ending with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', 'Admittedly', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical, and minor mechanical linking errors occur, such as the missing connector in 'a balanced approach... a practical solution'. Overall, the structure is clear and cohesive, fitting Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'financial stability', 'economic recessions', 'compound interest', and 'personality development'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'develop habit of saving' (missing article), 'advantage' instead of 'advantages', 'invest on individuals' instead of 'invest in individuals', and 'come at expense of' (missing article). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is varied enough to allow the message to be communicated clearly, aligning well with a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and conditional-style structures ('Individuals who have built up savings are better prepared...'). There is a good variety of sentence structures attempted; however, several grammatical errors occur throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('develop habit', 'at expense of'), preposition issues ('invest on individuals'), and tense/agreement slips ('many people who had emergency funds can be used for manage'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching Band 7, placing it comfortably in the Band 6 category.
