Student answer (Band 7.0)

There is a common belief that it is crucial for everyone, especially young people, to save money for their future. I share this view, as saving money is beneficial on two levels.

In the short term, saving money from a young age helps cultivate a positive mindset towards financial management. By paying more attention to money and savings, individuals begin to recognize the effort it takes to earn that money. For instance, if an undergraduate student spends half of their living expenses provided by their parents on a single luxury item instead of saving it, once they enter the workforce, they may continue to exhibit extravagant spending habits. Consequently, this could make it challenging for them to save for necessary expenses like rent. Therefore, young people should prioritize saving money as early as possible to ensure their independence and financial stability.

In the long term, having sufficient savings is essential for ensuring a decent quality of life in old age. As people age, it becomes increasingly inconvenient to live without professional caregivers. However, hiring such caregivers is often unaffordable for most, as their salaries generally exceed typical pension amounts. For example, a professional caregiver in Shanghai earns around 6,000 RMB per month, which is significantly higher than the average pension of 5,000 RMB. Therefore, it is important for individuals to start saving from a young age to secure their well-being in later life.

In conclusion, saving money during youth is advantageous as it addresses financial challenges both in the short term and long term. It is advisable that this awareness be widely promoted and practiced throughout society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating their position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. The response presents a well-developed argument divided into logical short-term and long-term perspectives. For example, the short-term impact is illustrated with a relevant scenario about an undergraduate student managing living expenses, while the long-term impact is supported by specific comparative data regarding caregiver salaries and average pensions in Shanghai (6,000 RMB versus 5,000 RMB). These ideas are extended and supported effectively, fulfilling all requirements of Band 7 and leaning towards the depth of Band 8.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to short-term benefits, long-term security, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately and effectively without being overly mechanical, as seen with transitional phrases like 'In the short term,' 'Consequently,' and 'In the long term.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to group related ideas together. The overall progression is easy to follow, justifying a solid Band 7.5 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items such as 'cultivate a positive mindset,' 'extravagant spending habits,' 'financial stability,' and 'professional caregivers.' Word choice is generally appropriate and natural, with only occasional minor lapses. The spelling and collocation are accurate throughout the text. While it stops just short of the wide, flexible range required for Band 8, the lexical resource comfortably meets the Band 7 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer employs a good variety of complex structures with frequent error-free sentences. Examples of successful complex structures include conditional and participial clauses, such as 'By paying more attention to money and savings, individuals begin to recognize...' and 'However, hiring such caregivers is often unaffordable for most, as their salaries generally exceed typical pension amounts.' Control of grammar and punctuation is strong, and there are no noticeable errors that impede communication. The high proportion of error-free sentences combined with syntactic variety earns this criterion a Band 7.5.
