Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is imperative for each person, even those who are young, to plan for the future and focus on saving money. This is essential as it will enable them to increase their chances of a positive future and life overall.

One benefit of saving money from a young age is it can increase educational opportunities and in turn attainment. If a sufficent amount of money is saved by adulthood, it could be used to fund a higher standard of education which conincides with the chances of finding better employment. Thus, it should be easier to find a job which is interesting with significant pay, helping fund personal hobbies and interests and increasing life satisfaction as a whole.

Moreover, another positive of starting to save money as a minor is you are better equipped to afford enjoyable things. This includes holidays which are often associated with positivity. For example, you can afford to pay for enjoyable holidays that aforementioned usually enhance life enjoyment as you can enjoy yourself and prioritise self-care. Notably, saving money is generally more accessible at a young age as the chances of having significant bills such as rent and dependants is reduced.

As a result, the goal of saving money is also more accessible if started from a lesser age.

To conclude, saving money for our future is vital for all people, including those who are younger. Not only will it allow us to be better educated and find superior employment but it will also increase our overall satsifaction of life via holidays and affordability of enjoyable activities. For these reasons, I concur with this statement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating and supporting their position that everyone, including young people, should save money. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as discussing how saved funds can increase educational attainment and afford enjoyable activities like holidays. While some arguments are slightly repetitive, the main points are sufficiently developed and relevant to the prompt, aligning well with the requirements for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, moving through two body paragraphs with clear topic sentences ('One benefit...', 'Moreover, another positive...'), and concluding appropriately. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader, such as 'Thus', 'Moreover', and 'As a result'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, although some transitional sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band. Overall, the structure meets the descriptors for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, employing terms such as 'imperative', 'attainment', 'coincides', and 'prioritise self-care'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style, though there are minor spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'sufficent' instead of 'sufficient', 'conincides' instead of 'coincides', and 'satsifaction' instead of 'satisfaction'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as conditional clauses ('If a sufficent amount of money is saved...'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'the chances of having significant bills such as rent and dependants is reduced' (subject-verb agreement error with 'bills... is'). However, the majority of sentences are understandable, and punctuation is generally handled well. These flaws rarely impede communication, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.
