Student answer (Band 6.0)

Spending a lot of money to enjoy life has been a popular trend among young generation. Nonetheless, I strongly believe that everybody should save enough money to ensure their security for the future.

To maintain a high social status, in recent times, people tend to spend a lot of money for their better appearance or other recreational purposes such as abroad tour or arranging expensive parties. People do these in order to be respected in society but it costs sometimes their fortune and it persuades them mostly to take heavy bank loans. Thus, they spend their whole life savings for arranging these and lose their future securities. Heavy expenditure on luxury has become a societal malady that is affecting all economic classes of people making them feel the urge to spend more and more. As a result, people are becoming unsecured in their future and sometimes getting in serious trouble such as going bankrupts.

In contrast, monthly small habits of saving money for the future can provide with securities for anybody. It is undeniable that only saving money without properly enjoying this life does not make any sense because it can cause boredom. People are not born in this world just to survive but to survive enjoying the every aspects of life. However, they can keep money for their luxury when they can assure their basic needs and basic securities for the future. After securing the future they can surely enjoy their life by the rest of their income.

In conclusion, saving money is crucial for the future needs in order to live a comfortable life. However, people can spend money after saving properly and then they can do whatever they want to enjoy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout. The introduction establishes your stance that saving for the future is essential, and this position is maintained. Body paragraph one discusses the negative trend of overspending on luxury for social status, while body paragraph two balances this by acknowledging the importance of enjoyment alongside sensible saving. Ideas are generally well-developed and supported with relevant explanations regarding financial security and quality of life. However, the reasoning could be extended slightly further with more specific examples rather than generalisations to reach the highest band levels. Overall, the task is addressed effectively, fitting comfortably into the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The paragraphs are structured effectively with an introduction, two distinct body paragraphs exploring different facets of the prompt, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Nonetheless', 'To maintain', 'In contrast', and 'In conclusion' are used to connect ideas and guide the reader. However, referencing and cohesive links are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'People'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall progression is clear, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary has an adequate range for the task and allows you to communicate your ideas clearly. You attempt some less common lexical items, such as 'societal malady', 'future securities', and 'financial security'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, for example, writing 'abroad tour' instead of 'abroad tours' or 'overseas trips', and 'getting in serious trouble such as going bankrupts' instead of 'bankruptcy'. Spelling and word-formation errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching higher bands. To improve, focus on precise collocations and natural phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and concessive clauses effectively (e.g., 'It is undeniable that only saving money without properly enjoying this life does not make any sense...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'young generation' (missing an article), 'abroad tour' (singular/plural mismatch), 'can provide with securities' (incorrect verb complementation), and 'survive enjoying the every aspects' (unnecessary article and preposition issues). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing your message to come across clearly. This performance aligns with Band 6.
