It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent years, it is crucial for all ages, especially for the younger generation, to save money for the future. I completely agree with this statement because a person can save money to invest in their children's studies, and by managing daily lifestyles. One particular significance is to create an importance of money in young people.

A parent can save loads of money in their banks to invest it in their child's studies and future education. In this era of inflation, managing household expenses is extremely difficult. Every item is expensive, and wasting money on unnecessary things is useless. So, this saved money will be helpful in such conditions. For example, many people keep an enclosed box and put the small portion of their salary in it.

Younger people spend lavishly; they don't care about the future to come, so they prefer enjoying the moment. They also have the opinion that money will come and go. However, they don't know when the tables turn. The country's financial condition can be changed in any bit. Thus, they should be taught to respect the money by saving it, as it is their own money and will be used for their own selves. For instance, the Asian people have started doing jobs so their expenses can be managed and they don't have to rely on anyone else's debt.

To sum up what we discussed so far, it is vital for everyone to save their money, as it will be helpful for them in their daily lifestyles as well as for future use.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether young people should save money for the future, taking a clear stance of complete agreement. The writer attempts to support this position by mentioning investment in education and managing daily expenses. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and uneven. For example, the mention of parents saving money shifts the focus slightly away from young people themselves, and the examples provided, such as 'keeping an enclosed box', are simplistic and under-developed. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the arguments lack depth and extension. Therefore, the response aligns best with the Band 6 descriptor where relevant ideas are presented, but some are under-developed or unclear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as parental saving versus young people's spending habits. However, logical progression is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions and somewhat repetitive phrasing, such as 'save money' and 'future use'. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes in a mechanical or simplistic way, as seen with 'One particular significance' and 'For example'. Referencing is generally clear, but the links between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to achieve a higher band. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 6, featuring a coherent arrangement despite some faulty or repetitive cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their main ideas about saving and expenses. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'lavishly', 'inflation', and 'financial condition', but these are accompanied by some inappropriate word choices or awkward collocations, such as 'create an importance of money', 'when the tables turn', and 'changed in any bit'. Spelling is generally accurate, but limitations in range and precision are evident throughout the text. These lexical errors and awkward phrasings do not impede overall communication, placing the response solidly at Band 6 for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'In recent years, it is crucial for all ages... to save money' and 'Thus, they should be taught to respect the money by saving it, as it is their own money...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'by managing daily lifestyles' (which lacks parallel structure), 'so their expenses can be managed and they don't have to rely on anyone else's debt', and missing or unnecessary articles like 'respect the money'. These errors occur regularly but rarely impede communication, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6 performance.
