Student answer (Band 7.5)
I strongly agree that everyone, including young people, should develop the habit of saving money for the future. Although young people may have relatively few financial responsibilities compared with older adults, saving from an early age can provide financial security and help them achieve important long-term goals.
One major reason why saving money is important is that it provides a financial safety net in times of unexpected difficulties. People can suddenly face situations such as losing their job, requiring medical treatment, or having to make an urgent payment. Without any savings, they may have no choice but to borrow money or depend on others. By contrast, even a modest emergency fund can help individuals deal with unforeseen expenses without experiencing severe financial stress. For example, a young employee who regularly saves part of their salary would be in a much better position to cope with a period of unemployment than someone who spends their entire income each month.
Saving is also particularly beneficial for young people because it allows them to work towards long-term objectives. Major milestones such as pursuing higher education, purchasing a home, starting a business or travelling abroad often require considerable financial resources. Developing a saving habit early means that these expenses can be planned for gradually rather than becoming an overwhelming financial burden later in life. Moreover, learning to budget and distinguish between essential and non-essential spending can help young adults develop responsible financial habits that may benefit them throughout their lives.
However, this does not mean that young people should save every available penny. They also need to spend money on education, social activities and experiences that contribute to their personal development and quality of life. The amount a person can reasonably save will also depend on their income and financial circumstances. Therefore, rather than following a fixed saving target, young people should aim to strike a sensible balance between enjoying the present and preparing for the future.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that saving money is important for people of all ages, including young adults. While they should not sacrifice their current quality of life entirely, establishing a regular saving habit can provide financial security, enable them to achieve future goals and encourage responsible financial behaviour.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task, taking a clear and well-developed position on whether everyone, including young people, should save money for the future. The student provides a strong stance in the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. The ideas are well extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the example of a young employee facing a period of unemployment. Furthermore, the writer acknowledges potential counter-arguments and nuances, such as noting that young people should not save every available penny and must also invest in their personal development. This thoughtful exploration of the topic aligns well with the Band 8 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Ideas are logically sequenced, and there is a clear progression throughout the response. The essay is divided into appropriate paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are managed well without being overly mechanical, using linking phrases such as 'One major reason', 'By contrast', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader smoothly from one idea to the next. Referencing throughout the text is clear, and paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to a coherent overall structure that meets the requirements for a Band 8.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, using less common items with an awareness of style and collocation, such as 'financial safety net', 'unforeseen expenses', 'overwhelming financial burden', and 'sensible balance'. Word choices are generally natural and accurate. While the vocabulary is fluent and appropriate, it occasionally lacks the truly wide and sophisticated range or skilful manipulation of uncommon lexical items required to reach Band 8. Therefore, a Band 7.0 is most fitting for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writer uses a wide variety of complex sentence structures effectively, such as conditional and concessive clauses ('Although young people may have relatively few financial responsibilities...', 'By contrast, even a modest emergency fund can help...'). There is a high proportion of error-free sentences, and the control of grammar and punctuation is strong throughout the response. Minor slips are very rare and do not impede communication in any way. The grammatical range and accuracy clearly reflect the Band 8 descriptor profile.
