Student answer (Band 7.0)

Over recent years, securing financial stability has become a hotly debated issue in contemporary society. This matter is particularly significant due to its impact on the younger generation's independence and self-esteem, affecting both individuals and society. I firmly believe that saving money is an indication of considering one's future. In this essay, I will present the reasons for my viewpoint, supported by both evidence and reasoning.

One major reason why saving money for the future would be beneficial for people, including young individuals, is the future benefits it can provide. It can help them realize the importance of saving and financial stability, which would put them in a better position in life. For instance, someone who learns to save from a young age would become more frugal and responsible with their spending and overall expenses. This would lead to a more balanced approach to money management and help them avoid unnecessary and impulsive purchases.

Another point to consider is that saving money from a young age can have a compounding effect, meaning that small savings can accumulate over time and provide significant benefits. To illustrate, someone who saves a small portion of their salary every month could eventually accumulate enough money to buy or lease a house, afford a mortgage, deal with emergency medical expenses, and move towards financial freedom.

Admittedly, saving money from a young age can be a very practical approach to life. However, living a life in which one saves every penny and does not take part in activities or enjoy the abundance of resources that life has to offer is also not a feasible approach. A balanced lifestyle would be preferable, in which people buy only the things that are necessary and save money by avoiding purchases that provide little benefit. In this way, they can enjoy the benefits that life has to offer while also gradually working towards financial security and maintaining funds for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that young people should develop financial independence rather than relying entirely on their parents. Moving forward, it is essential for individuals to understand the benefits of saving money from an early age and to maintain a balance between enjoying life and preparing for the future. This can lead to greater financial security and positive outcomes for both individuals and society as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response clearly addresses all parts of the task by taking a firm stance on the importance of saving money for young people and discussing reasons to support this view. The position is clear throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing the compounding effect and the importance of financial independence, though the explanation in the second body paragraph tends to repeat general notions of being 'frugal and responsible' rather than introducing fully distinct points. Overall, the task is well addressed, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to supporting body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'To illustrate', 'Another point to consider', and 'Admittedly', demonstrating a flexible approach to cohesion. Paragraphing is also managed appropriately, with clear visual and logical separation of ideas, fitting the Band 7.0 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, employing less common items such as 'financial stability', 'compounding effect', and 'financial freedom'. While there are some slightly repetitive phrasing patterns, such as repeatedly using 'saving money from a young age', word choice is generally appropriate and allows the message to be communicated clearly. Occasional minor slips occur, but the lexical range easily satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures, such as in 'someone who learns to save from a young age would become more frugal'. Punctuation and grammar are generally well-controlled, and although there are occasional minor phrasing clunkiness elements like 'living a life in which one saves every penny', these do not impede communication. The control of grammar aligns well with a Band 6.5 score.
