IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that everyone, including young people, should save money for their future. I strongly agree with this statement because saving money can provide financial security and help people achieve their future goals.

Firstly, saving money is important because it can help people deal with unexpected expenses. For example, people may suddenly need money for medical treatment, education, or repairing their house or car. If they have some savings, they can manage these situations without borrowing money from others. Therefore, saving from a young age can make people more financially independent.

Secondly, young people can use their savings to achieve important goals in the future. They may want to continue their education, start a business, buy a house, or travel to another country. For instance, a student who regularly saves a small amount of money can later use it to pay for a course or other educational expenses. This also teaches young people how to manage their money responsibly.

However, young people should not save every penny because they also need to spend money on their basic needs and enjoy their lives. The important thing is to create a balance between spending and saving. Even saving a small amount regularly can be useful in the long term.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that everyone, including young people, should save money for the future. It provides financial security, supports future plans, and develops good money-management habits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response clearly addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a strong, consistent position that everyone, including young people, should save money for the future. Ideas are well developed with relevant examples, such as unexpected medical expenses and funding future goals like education or travel. The writer also acknowledges an opposing or balancing view, noting that young people should not save every penny and must maintain a balance between spending and saving. However, a penalty must be applied for length because the response contains 237 words, falling short of the required 250-word minimum. Despite this omission, the task is otherwise well-handled and meets the criteria for a higher band if word length were sufficient. Because the length requirement was not met, the score is adjusted accordingly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. The essay begins with a distinct introduction outlining the writer's position, followed by body paragraphs that are introduced with appropriate cohesive markers like 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'However.' Each paragraph focuses on a central topic, such as unexpected expenses, future goals, or the need for balance, concluding with a summary statement in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately throughout the text. Referencing and substitution are handled clearly, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the flow of ideas. Cohesive devices are used naturally without appearing mechanical, contributing to a smooth and coherent reading experience.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to finance and personal development, such as 'financial security,' 'unexpected expenses,' 'financially independent,' and 'money-management habits.' While much of the vocabulary is standard and appropriate, the writer also attempts some less common phrasing, such as 'create a balance between spending and saving.' There are very few lexical errors, and word choice is generally precise and natural, meaning communication is never impeded. Although the range is not exceptionally wide or sophisticated enough for a Band 8, it comfortably exceeds the requirements of Band 6 through its consistent accuracy and suitability.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good control of grammar and punctuation. The writer successfully employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or subordinate clauses such as 'If they have some savings, they can manage these situations without borrowing money from others' and 'a student who regularly saves a small amount of money can later use it to pay for a course.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. While the range of complex structures is somewhat standard rather than wide and varied, the high level of accuracy across the sentences supports a solid performance for this criterion.
