Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear stance that saving money is important while acknowledging counter-arguments regarding those who cannot afford to save. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as unexpected health problems requiring surgery and unemployment challenges. However, some arguments lack deeper elaboration, and the conclusion is slightly repetitive with the introduction. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing this response at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding thought. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the necessity of savings versus the inability to save due to unemployment. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. There are noticeable issues with spacing and punctuation after full stops and commas, which disrupts the natural flow. Additionally, referencing and transitional phrases like 'incase' and 'to not talk more of' hinder smoother progression. This reflects the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'predicament', 'unforeseen circumstances', and 'paramount importance'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('uncertainities', 'economy changes', 'accomodation', 'unforseen', 'whwn') and word-choice inaccuracies ('money been needed', 'significance unemployment rate'). These lexical lapses and spelling mistakes indicate an overall Band 6 level, though communication is not severely impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If it happens that someone has to face...') and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including missing spaces after punctuation marks, subject-verb agreement errors ('surgery that requires', 'issues like significance unemployment rate makes'), and awkward phrasing. While the meaning remains mostly clear despite these errors, the density of grammatical slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, making Band 5.5 a fair assessment.
