Student answer (Band 7.0)

Financial discipline in the form of saving is an essential quality that people should learn, even as children. The financial goals of most individuals are largely focused on earning money and investing it appropriately, while saving is often overlooked. I believe that saving should be a habit instilled in everyone, regardless of the size of their income.

Having a savings account largely serves two purposes. First, it provides financial security in times of unexpected expenses; second, it helps individuals develop the habit of setting aside money for their future needs. For instance, an unfortunate road accident can result in substantial hospital bills, and relying solely on a monthly paycheque in such a situation can be financially stressful. Instead, having sufficient savings can help individuals cover unexpected expenses without placing additional pressure on their regular income. Insurance companies may not cover all expenses, and relying solely on insurance can leave individuals financially vulnerable. Similarly, individuals often believe that other forms of investment, such as land, property and gold, are smarter ways of maintaining their financial portfolios. However, in times of emergency, these assets cannot necessarily be converted into cash immediately. These assets are not always liquid enough to cover unexpected emergencies.

Saving is often seen as less attractive than investing, as it generates little to no return; however, its value lies in the ease with which the money can be accessed. Hence, the habit of saving should be nurtured from an early age, both at home and in schools. Parents can provide children with a monthly allowance to help them become familiar with the practice of spending and saving. Schools can also play a role by educating students about formal methods of saving, such as opening a savings bank account. Saving is an important skill that is often overlooked even in financial literacy, where the focus is largely on investing. Individuals should educate themselves through books and courses to equip themselves not only to build wealth but also to manage financial emergencies.

In conclusion, although investments help build wealth, saving remains essential to maintain financial security and deal with unexpected expenses. The earlier the habit is picked up, more disciplined and comfortable one can become with providing a secure financial future for themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly presenting a well-developed position on whether everyone, including young people, should save money for the future. The writer takes a clear stance in the introduction, agreeing with the statement, and maintains this position throughout the essay. Ideas are thoroughly extended and supported with relevant explanations and real-world examples, such as unexpected road accidents and hospital bills. Furthermore, the writer explores the distinction between saving and investing, arguing compellingly for the liquidity and security benefits of savings accounts over other less accessible assets. The response satisfies the requirements for Band 8 by covering all parts of the prompt thoroughly and extending well-developed arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with the introduction of the premise, moving into the specific purposes and liquidity of savings, discussing how the habit can be nurtured in schools and homes, and concluding effectively. Cohesive devices are used appropriately and flexibly to link ideas, such as 'First,' 'second,' 'Instead,' and 'Hence.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically to separate distinct arguments. Referencing is clear and unambiguous, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the flow of ideas. This performance aligns comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student employs a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion on financial literacy. Less common lexical items are used effectively with a strong awareness of style and collocation, such as 'financial discipline,' 'financial security,' 'liquid enough,' and 'financial portfolios.' Word choice is generally precise, and the phrasing sounds natural. While there are occasional minor limitations or repetitive structures, the vocabulary is rich enough to allow for precise meaning. The lexical resource displayed easily meets the standards for a Band 7 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The writer demonstrates a strong command of grammatical structures, successfully employing a wide variety of complex sentences alongside simple forms. Examples such as 'Although investments help build wealth, saving remains essential to maintain financial security...' illustrate good control over subordinate clauses and punctuation. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips that do occur—such as the missing article in the concluding sentence ('The earlier the habit is picked up, the more disciplined...')—do not impede communication in any way. Grammatical control is strong and consistent throughout, fully meriting a Band 8 score.
