Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and drawbacks of saving money, establishing a partial agreement position in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on investment and health emergencies is stated generally without deep exploration. The counter-argument regarding basic necessities is relevant but lacks robust extension. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the ideas would benefit from greater elaboration and more specific supporting details to reach a higher band. Nevertheless, a clear stance is maintained throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent transitions like 'Of equal importance is the fact that' and 'To make it more clear'. Referencing is generally clear, though the progression of ideas within paragraphs can occasionally feel abrupt. Overall, the logical flow is adequate for a band 6, but cohesion lacks the flexibility and subtlety seen at higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'contentious issue', 'juveniles', 'compounded', and 'detrimental impact'. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'in the surroundings' instead of 'in society', 'mases' instead of 'masses', and 'turn low' instead of 'decline' or 'worsen'. Spelling errors like 'forseeable', 'preperation', and 'indiviual' also occur. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect limitations in lexical precision and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent punctuation and spacing errors, particularly unnecessary spaces before commas (e.g., 'times ,'). Other structural errors include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'savings not only has prime advantages', where 'savings' is plural, and awkward phrasing like 'the mases would not be able to fulfil their basic necessities'. While complex structures are attempted, they are frequently flawed, placing this response firmly in the band 5 range for grammar.
