Student answer (Band 7.5)

Saving money is an important habit for people of all ages, including young people. I strongly agree that everyone should try to save for the future because it provides financial security and helps people achieve long-term goals.

One major reason for saving money is that unexpected expenses can arise at any time. People may suddenly face medical bills, unemployment, car repairs or other emergencies. Those who have some savings are better able to deal with such situations without borrowing money or relying heavily on family members. For young people in particular, developing the habit of saving early can make them more financially responsible and better prepared for adult life.

Another important reason is that savings allow people to achieve major goals. For example, young adults may want to pay for higher education, buy a car, travel, start a business or purchase a home in the future. These goals often require a significant amount of money, so saving regularly can make them more achievable. Even putting aside a small amount each month can build up over time and reduce financial pressure later.

However, this does not mean that people should save every possible dollar and avoid enjoying life. It is also important to spend reasonably on education, experiences and personal needs. The key is to maintain a balance between present enjoyment and future security. In my view, setting aside a fixed proportion of income is a practical way to do this.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that saving money is essential for everyone, especially young people. It provides protection against unexpected difficulties and helps individuals achieve important future goals. Developing this habit early can lead to greater financial stability and independence later in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position in favor of saving money and supporting this stance with relevant arguments. The introduction clearly states the writer's view, and body paragraphs explore distinct reasons, such as handling unexpected emergencies and achieving long-term goals like buying a car or funding education. Furthermore, the inclusion of a counter-perspective in the fourth paragraph ('However, this does not mean that people should save every possible dollar') adds nuance and deepens the development of the topic. The ideas are extended and supported effectively throughout the essay. This performance meets the criteria for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the general importance of saving, moving to specific reasons like emergencies and long-term goals, addressing a counter-argument, and finishing with a cohesive conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately without being overly mechanical, as seen with phrases like 'One major reason', 'Another important reason', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is managed sufficiently and logically guides the reader through the writer's argument. This level of cohesion and structural clarity aligns well with Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for some precision and flexibility. Phrases such as 'financial security', 'unexpected expenses', 'financially responsible', and 'long-term goals' are used accurately. The writer also attempts some less common lexical items and collocations, such as 'relying heavily on family members' and 'maintain a balance between present enjoyment and future security'. While the vocabulary is generally natural and appropriate for an academic response, it occasionally relies on standard, everyday terms rather than highly sophisticated or nuanced academic vocabulary. Therefore, this performance warrants a Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The writer uses a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, maintaining a high proportion of error-free sentences. Examples of complex structures include 'Those who have some savings are better able to deal with such situations without borrowing money' and 'Even putting aside a small amount each month can build up over time'. Control over grammar and punctuation is strong, with accurate use of relative clauses, gerunds as subjects, and modal verbs. Minor slips are virtually absent, and the grammar never impedes communication. This level of grammatical control and variety comfortably meets the Band 8.0 descriptor.
