Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many people believe that saving money is essential for all individuals, including the younger generation, as it secures their future. I completely agree with this view because financial savings provide stability, encourage responsible habits, and create opportunities for growth.

To begin with, saving money ensures financial stability in the long run. Life is unpredictable, and emergencies such as medical expenses, job loss, or sudden family needs can arise at any time. Having savings allows individuals to face these challenges without falling into debt. For young people, building this habit early helps them develop resilience and independence. For example, students who save part of their allowance or income can manage unexpected costs like tuition hikes or relocation expenses.

Moreover, saving fosters discipline and responsibility. When young people learn to set aside money regularly, they become more conscious of their spending habits. This financial awareness prevents impulsive purchases and encourages long-term planning. For instance, saving for higher education, professional courses, or even starting a business requires consistent effort, which instills maturity and foresight.

In addition, savings open opportunities for future investments. Money accumulated over time can be used to buy property, invest in stocks, or support entrepreneurial ventures. These investments not only secure personal growth but also contribute to economic development. Without savings, young people may miss out on such opportunities and remain financially dependent.

However, some argue that young people should focus on enjoying life rather than saving, since they have fewer responsibilities. While leisure is important, excessive spending without saving can lead to regret later when financial responsibilities increase. A balanced approach—spending wisely while saving consistently—is therefore essential.

In conclusion, saving money is a crucial practice for all age groups. For young people, it builds financial discipline, prepares them for emergencies, and creates opportunities for future success. Developing this habit early ensures a secure and prosperous future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a complete agreement with the prompt and supporting this position throughout the essay. The writer explores multiple well-developed ideas, such as financial stability, the promotion of responsible habits, and the creation of opportunities for growth. Each body paragraph presents a clear main idea that is extended and supported with relevant examples, such as students managing tuition hikes or funding entrepreneurial ventures. Furthermore, the inclusion of a counter-argument paragraph adds depth and demonstrates a well-rounded consideration of the topic before reinforcing the original stance. The position is maintained consistently from the introduction to the conclusion, fully meeting the criteria for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Ideas are logically sequenced with a clear overall progression throughout the essay. Each paragraph flows naturally into the next, guided by effective cohesive devices and transitional phrases such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'In addition'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct, central theme—stability, discipline, investments, and a counter-perspective. Referencing is clear, and the internal cohesion within sentences is well managed without feeling overly mechanical or obtrusive, resulting in a smooth reading experience that aligns well with the descriptors for Band 7.0 and 8.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion. Less common items such as 'unpredictable', 'resilience', 'impulsive purchases', and 'entrepreneurial ventures' are used effectively with a good awareness of collocation and style. Word choice is generally precise, allowing the writer to convey subtle nuances regarding financial habits and personal growth. Although there are no major lexical errors, the vocabulary occasionally leans towards standard rather than highly sophisticated or rare academic phrasing, placing it comfortably within the Band 7 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response exhibits a wide variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional-like clauses and subordinate structures, such as 'When young people learn to set aside money regularly, they become more conscious of their spending habits.' The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and the writer demonstrates very good control of grammar and punctuation. Minor slips are virtually absent, and even when complex syntax is attempted, the grammar remains robust and completely transparent. This high level of accuracy combined with structural variety fully supports a Band 8 score.
