Student answer (Band 7.5)

Many people believe that saving money is an essential habit that everyone, including young people, should develop. I strongly agree with this view because financial savings provide security during unexpected situations and help individuals achieve long-term goals.

One of the main reasons why young people should save money is that it prepares them for financial emergencies. Life is unpredictable, and unexpected expenses such as medical bills, job loss, or urgent repairs can arise at any time. Those who have developed a habit of saving are better equipped to deal with these challenges without falling into debt. For example, many university students who maintain a small emergency fund can cope more easily with sudden expenses, such as replacing a broken laptop, without relying on loans or financial support from their families.

Another important benefit of saving from a young age is that it enables people to achieve their future ambitions. Whether purchasing a house, starting a business, or pursuing higher education, most major life goals require significant financial resources. By saving regularly over a long period, young people can reduce their dependence on borrowing and avoid paying high interest rates. Furthermore, learning to manage money early in life encourages discipline, responsibility, and thoughtful spending, all of which contribute to long-term financial well-being.

Some people argue that young people should spend their income on experiences, personal development, or travel rather than saving it. While these activities are undoubtedly valuable, they do not necessarily conflict with the habit of saving. A balanced approach, in which individuals enjoy the present while setting aside a portion of their income for the future, is far more sustainable than spending everything they earn.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that everyone, especially young people, should save money for the future. Establishing this habit not only provides protection against unexpected financial difficulties but also makes it easier to achieve important life goals while promoting responsible financial management.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear, well-developed position on whether young people should save money for their future. The introduction clearly states a strong agreement, which is maintained throughout the essay. The body paragraphs present distinct, well-reasoned arguments supported by relevant examples, such as university students replacing a broken laptop without relying on loans. Furthermore, the writer acknowledges and refutes a counter-argument regarding spending on experiences and travel, adding depth to the discussion. All ideas are extended and fully supported, aligning well with the criteria for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introductory thesis, followed by well-sequenced body paragraphs, a well-managed counter-argument paragraph, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and flexibly without being intrusive, as seen with phrases like 'One of the main reasons', 'Whether purchasing', and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the overall structure guides the reader smoothly from one idea to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student uses a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion on personal finance. Less common lexical items are used effectively and with good awareness of collocation, such as 'financial savings', 'emergency fund', 'long-term financial well-being', and 'sustainable'. Word choice is generally precise, and spelling is accurate throughout the text. While the vocabulary is not completely sophisticated in every single instance, it easily meets the requirements for a high band by demonstrating natural control and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The writing exhibits a wide range of complex sentence structures used accurately and flexibly. The majority of sentences are error-free, demonstrating a strong command of grammar and punctuation. Examples of effective complex structures include conditional and participial constructions like 'By saving regularly over a long period, young people can reduce their dependence...' and 'A balanced approach, in which individuals enjoy the present while setting aside a portion of their income...'. Errors are virtually non-existent, reflecting a high level of grammatical control appropriate for a Band 8 performance.
