Student answer (Band 6.5)
Saving money for the future is necessary for everyone, including young people. It can be a valuable resource in urgent situations. Therefore, I strongly advocate for the adoption of money-saving habits for all age groups.
Firstly, saved money is often useful during an emergency or urgent situation. An individual who has some money aside does not have to ask others or take a heavy loan. Additionally, they have the ability and capacity to help those in need. For instance, if you have ten thousand saved from daily expenditures, you can use it either for a charity donation or to help a relative who is undergoing an expensive surgery.
Secondly, young people saving money can utilize it in several ways. They can use it to enrol in dance classes, to pay for piano classes, to participate in chess competitions, or even join a summer camp. It allows them to participate in extracurricular activities that require little fee. It gives a sense of financial independence and autonomy to invest the saved amount for personal development.
Thirdly, it helps in developing life-survival skills as well. When youngsters save money from their pocket money or earn it through side jobs, they understand the value of money and spend it wisely. When it comes to spending it, they do financial budgeting, allocating smaller funds for priorities. Planning skills are also developed while saving money for the future. They also realize the meaning of need and luxury and prioritize accordingly.
However, one should understand the boundary between saving money and compromising needs. For example, my cousin used to skip meals to save money. Eventually, he fell sick and had to pay a large hospital bill, spending more money than he saved. Your income should be distributed based on important things such as rent, groceries, medical treatment, etc. Still, if any amount remains, then you can save that money aside to use it in the future instead of wasting it on unimportant items.
To sum up, saving money can be a friend in difficult times, help you avoid heavy loans, and make you capable of helping people. Additionally, it can be invested in grooming your personality, and you develop skills like planning for the future, prioritizing needs, valuing money, spending wisely, and financial budgeting. However, a balanced approach should be adopted, where money should be invested in important and basic needs, and then the remaining amount should be saved for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating and supporting a position on whether everyone, including young people, should save money for the future. The writer establishes a strong stance in the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. Ideas are well developed and extended across multiple body paragraphs, covering emergency preparedness, personal development opportunities for youth, and life-survival skills. For instance, the example of a relative undergoing expensive surgery or a cousin skipping meals provide relevant context. Although some generalisations are made, the position is clear and well-supported, successfully meeting the Band 7 requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, introduced clearly with cohesive markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Thirdly', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments and the counter-argument. While some cohesive devices are a bit formulaic, referencing is generally clear and the overall arrangement allows the reader to follow the argument effortlessly, aligning with the Band 7 descriptor for clear logical organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision. Less common lexical items such as 'financial independence', 'autonomy', 'extracurricular activities', and 'financial budgeting' are employed with reasonable success. There is a good awareness of style, and although minor infelicities occur, such as 'take a heavy loan' instead of 'take out a heavy loan', word choice remains appropriate and communication is never impeded. This sits comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7 range, rounding well to Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional clauses, relative clauses, and introductory prepositional phrases (e.g., 'When youngsters save money from their pocket money or earn it through side jobs, they understand the value of money...'). There is good control of punctuation and grammar overall. While occasional minor errors exist, such as 'save that money aside', the majority of complex sentences are accurate, and errors never impede communication, meriting a solid Band 7 score.
