Student answer (Band 6.0)

Working, spending and saving are the three main aspects of human's life. Gone are the days when people saved a large part of their incomes, whereas nowadays, individuals spend more than they save. It has been put forward that it is necessary for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future. I agree with this stance. I shall discuss my views in the upcoming paragraphs.

The predominent reason that supports that saving money for the future is important for every individual is future security. It is commonly observed that future is uncertain. There may be fall in the income of people, due to which it would be difficult for them to survive. Therefore, every person ought to save some amount for meeting their future needs. In addition to it, inflation is another rationale. To explicate it, when someone ensures savings for future, they secure themselves from rising prices of commodities such as food and clothing which are basic needs of every individual.

In contrast, one has been given only one life by God. Therefore, one should enjoy it to the fullest without worrying about savings. The notable justification put forward is that young age is the age of enjoyment. Thus, everyone including youngsters ought to spend their money in leisure activities like social gatherings, parties, shopping, etcectra. In addition to that, spendings are not always unsual. To explicate it, spending not only results in wastage of money, rather, it is done to fulfill ones requirements. Nevertheless this argument can be annulled by the fact that saving money also assits in earnings. For instance, when a person made investment in saving schemes, they earn interest on that income till the end of maturity period of policy.

To conclude the aforementioned arguments in a nutshell, it can be reiterated that although every individual should spend their money, yet in my opinion, saving is highly essential for everyone including the youngsters.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear and consistent stance in agreement with the statement. The ideas presented are generally relevant, fulfilling the lower requirements well while beginning to touch upon the higher band by presenting extended arguments. For instance, the discussion on future security and inflation in the second paragraph provides clear support for the viewpoint. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or briefly treated, such as the counter-argument regarding enjoyment in youth, which lacks deeper extension. To reach the next level, every supporting point needs to be fully elaborated with robust examples rather than relying on brief generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays an overall coherent arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised sufficiently to separate different viewpoints, grouping the arguments for saving in one paragraph and the counter-arguments in another. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical and repetitive, relying on formulas such as 'To explicate it' and 'In addition to that.' Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, which disrupts the natural flow of information. To move to a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing within and between sentences is smoother and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'predominent', 'rationale', and 'annulled'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('predominent', 'assits', 'etcectra', 'spendings', 'unsual') and minor word choice inaccuracies. While communication is not severely impeded, these slips reveal a lack of precise control over less frequent lexical items. To achieve a higher band, the vocabulary range needs to be expanded with more sophisticated collocations, and greater care must be taken with spelling and word forms to ensure accuracy throughout the entire response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as subordinate clauses and conditional constructions. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'when a person made investment' instead of 'makes an investment' and 'meeting their future needs'. Punctuation and articles also show occasional lapses, for example, missing articles before singular countable nouns ('due to which it would be difficult' or 'when someone ensures savings'). These errors rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammar firmly within the mid-range. To improve, the writer needs to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over verb tenses and article usage.
