Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe that saving money for the future is beneficial for everyone, especially young people. I partially agree with this statement because this approach can help individuals in difficult situations. However, I partially disagree with this view as people cannot fulfil their desires if they save money. In this essay, I will discuss reasons behind both views and draw a possible conclusion as well.

On the one hand, I believe, it is important for everyone to save money for their future as it can help in unexpected situations such as serious illnesses and job loss. For instance, people often cannot discover serious diseases such as a cancer at early stages. When they get to know, hospitals and doctors demand a large amount of money for treatment purposes. Therefore, their saving can help them to manage this type of challenging condition.

On the other hand, I think if individuals save a large percentage of their income for the future then they cannot fulfil their desires. In my opinion, everyone should spend money on things that they want. This gives them inner satisfaction and peace. For example, nowadays , everyone especially younger generation want to buy an iPhone in order to fit in a society. They may feel social pressure, if they are not able to get it. Consequently, It is essential for everyone to fulfil their desires for mental well-being.

In a nutshell, although saving salary helps people in difficult circumstances, I think individuals should spend money on things that give them mental peace. From my perspective, people should adopt a balanced approach such as save some amount for the future and remaining amount for their needs and desires.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that you partially agree and partially disagree with the statement. You provide relevant ideas for both sides, such as saving for unexpected medical emergencies like 'a cancer' and job losses, balanced against the psychological need to fulfil desires and buy items like an iPhone for social acceptance. However, some of your ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, the discussion surrounding social pressure and fulfilling immediate desires is introduced well, but the supporting arguments could have been extended further. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that all parts of your argument receive equal depth of extension and support throughout the essay, avoiding any tendency to over-generalise your examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, distinct body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. You make use of standard cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'In a nutshell' to guide the reader through your arguments. Furthermore, paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating each main idea into its own logical block. To move towards a higher band, you can improve how referencing and cohesion are managed internally, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and ensuring seamless progression between sentences will elevate the overall flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms such as 'unexpected situations', 'serious illnesses', 'inner satisfaction', and 'mental well-being'. You also make attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is sometimes accompanied by minor inaccuracies or unnatural phrasing, such as writing 'a cancer' with an unnecessary article, or 'save some amount for the future and remaining amount'. Your spelling is generally accurate. To achieve a higher score, you need to use a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary with greater precision, particularly regarding collocations and style, ensuring that less common lexical items are used naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures such as conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'although saving salary helps people in difficult circumstances, I think...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('save some amount', 'remaining amount') and awkward comma placement ('nowadays , everyone especially younger generation want'), but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To reach the next band, you should aim to produce more frequent error-free sentences while maintaining a wide variety of complex structures and precise punctuation control.
