Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is important for everyone to save money for the future, including youngsters. This essay will discuss if this statement is relevant.

I agree that it is important for everyone to save money for the future, only if they have enough earning. Young people can save money if they want to but i believe it is not compulsory for them, as it stresses young minds.

Saving money is beneficial. The money saved can be used to fulfill dreams. If a person wants to buy a house or a car but it is expensive then they can save money from time to time and eventually buy a house or a car. Money can be saved to solve any future problems such as unexpected disaster, accident or any financial crisis. As the cost of living is getting higher, planning for the future is important.

Not everyone is able to afford basic necessities. For them, it is difficult to save money. For anyone who is not able to earn a proper salary for living cannot save money. Young people can try to save money if they are earning. It will be helpful for them in the future.

I agree that everyone should save money only if they can afford to. Hence, only the people who is earning an adequate amount of money that helps them fulfill basic necessities should save money.

For instance, my cousin brother met with an accident which caused him a ligament tear. For the treatment he had to undergo a surgery that was expensive. He payed for the surgery through his savings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that saving money is important provided individuals have sufficient earnings. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the point about using savings for major life purchases or emergencies is relevant and supported by an example about a cousin, other points are somewhat repetitive, particularly the discussion surrounding those who cannot afford to save. Some ideas are under-developed, hovering around basic assertions without deep extension. For instance, the notion that saving stresses young minds is introduced in the second paragraph but is not fully explored or contrasted with the long-term benefits. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to fully develop all parts of the argument with sustained extension and richer examples throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an attempt to organise ideas logically. However, the progression is sometimes hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices. Paragraphing is used, but transitions between paragraphs feel abrupt rather than smoothly flowing. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun shifts and repetitive sentence openings that make the flow somewhat rigid. To progress further, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that each paragraph builds logically and seamlessly upon the previous one, creating a clearer overall progression of thought.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts relating to finances and personal circumstances. Words like necessities, adequate, and financial crisis show an attempt to use less common items. However, there are notable limitations and minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as using 'enough earning' instead of 'sufficient earnings' or 'cousin brother' instead of simply 'cousin'. Spelling is generally acceptable and vocabulary choices do not impede communication, but the precision and style remain somewhat basic. To achieve a higher score, the writer must incorporate a broader, more sophisticated range of vocabulary and demonstrate better control over collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses using 'if' and 'that'. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'the people who is earning' instead of 'are earning', and articles or prepositions inside grammatical patterns, such as 'He payed for the surgery' (spelling aside, prepositional control and tense consistency). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the core message. To improve, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise greater control over agreement, verb tenses, and structural accuracy.
