Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, establishing a clear position of agreement regarding the importance of saving money for the future, including for young people. The ideas presented are generally relevant, covering aspects such as the difficulty of earning money, unexpected emergencies like illnesses, and the unreliability of pensions. However, the development of these ideas is uneven. While some points are supported with basic examples, others remain somewhat under-developed or repetitive, particularly the transition between individual hardships and broader societal saving habits. To reach a higher level, the ideas would need more fully extended support and deeper exploration rather than general assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance maintained throughout. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as the difficulty of earning money in the second paragraph and the function of savings during unexpected situations in the third paragraph. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, with some abrupt transitions between sentences and ideas, such as moving from rollercoasters to diseases. Referencing and cohesive devices are occasionally repetitive or unclear, such as the use of 'For instance' and pronoun references that do not always link smoothly to the preceding sentence. Better control over logical progression and transitional phrases would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'rising competition', 'discounted products', and 'unexpected situation'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'basic essential' instead of 'essentials', 'when it to comes to save' instead of 'come to saving', 'diseases' instead of 'disease', 'need money' instead of 'the need for money', and 'become miser' instead of 'become a miser'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reflect a limited precision in vocabulary control that keeps the score at this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include sentence fragments such as 'As life is always like a rollercoster.', missing articles ('in there life' and 'at old age'), prepositional and agreement errors ('to get a better future'), and punctuation slips like incorrect spacing and lowercase pronouns ('i'). Although these grammatical errors rarely entirely impede communication, their frequency across simple and complex constructions indicates a lack of consistent accuracy.
