Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt partially, stating an agreement with the statement about saving money, but the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the writer mentions that spending money on events is a waste and that saving provides a stable home, but these points are expressed repetitively rather than thoroughly extended with relevant examples or explanations. Furthermore, the response is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence at the end of the final paragraph. Additionally, the length requirement is not met, as the essay contains only 233 words, which falls short of the minimum 250-word requirement. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop each main point with detailed explanations and examples while meeting the required word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation with paragraph breaks, but the overall progression of ideas is lacking. The essay relies on simple transitional phrases like 'to commence with' and 'On the other hand', but the connections between sentences are often repetitive and mechanical. For example, the phrase 'Save money' is used at the beginning of multiple consecutive sentences, making the cohesive devices inadequate and repetitive. Referencing and paragraphing are attempted, but the abrupt ending due to the incomplete text disrupts the logical flow. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of pronouns and linking words to connect ideas smoothly and ensure every paragraph contains a clear central topic with a logical progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, reflecting a minimally adequate range for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. For example, terms like 'unececcery' (unnecessary), 'relaxtation' (relaxing), 'sucessful' (successful), and 'amont' (amount) demonstrate frequent spelling mistakes. Additionally, awkward collocations such as 'relaxtation life' and 'living in better condition' show a lack of control over word forms and appropriate usage. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, accurately spell common and less common words, and pay closer attention to word formation and correct collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures used are very basic, consisting mainly of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex forms. Frequent errors are present throughout the text, involving verb tenses, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples of errors include 'Some people believe that save money for future it is very important', 'a too much money', and 'people to independent'. These persistent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and occasionally obscure the intended meaning. To improve in this area, the writer needs to practise constructing error-free simple and complex sentences, ensuring proper subject-verb agreement, correct use of infinitives, and accurate tense consistency.
