Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is an ogoing debate that whether we should save for the future or not. Many individuals believe that everybody including the young generation should keep some money rather than spending every penny. I agree with this statement, and in this essay, I will give provide reasons in favour of my argument.

To begin with, one key factor is not to become dependent on anyone in old age. It can be contributed to the fact that many individuals of the society, when they reach a certain age where they are not able to continue their jobs, need someone to support them financially, physically and emotionally as well. Provided that if a person saves to become financially stable, he does not have to rely on someone else for financial aid. Moreover, a care worker or a helper can be hired when needed. Ultimately, saving in young age increases the probability of improved life afterwards.

Another considerable point is health problems that can appear unexpectedly. It is particularly important because many diseases like cancer, diabetes, and other cardiovascular diseases have become increasingly common. If a patient has resources to pay for the treatment and medicines, he can cope with these kind of situations in a better way. Organ transplant, for instance, requires a huge sum to find the matching donor, and to afford the treatment cost. Hence, saving money is essential for survival and better health of all the members of the community.

Conversely, others claim that there is no need to save money for the future because they are more likely to receive pension in old age which can be used in need. This means that everybody gets one life which can end at any moment, so we should enjoy ourselves, and spend on things that we admire. One example is a person who wants to explore other countries, so he travels to fulfill his desires instead of keeping the resources for an unpredictable future.

Although life is too uncertain to save a lot, I still perceive that it is a better approach to be financially and mentally prepared for any liablity or mishap.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, which earns a solid footing in the middle bands. The student introduces relevant ideas regarding financial independence in old age and the necessity of handling unexpected health issues. Furthermore, the counter-argument regarding pensions and enjoying the present moment is thoughtfully presented. However, some ideas remain under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the point about health problems introduces cancer and organ transplants, but the link back to why young people specifically must save now rather than later is left slightly implicit. The arguments are relevant and support the overall thesis, but to reach the higher bands, each main body paragraph would need deeper elaboration and a more thoroughly sustained exploration of how the argument applies to all age groups, including the young.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with independent living, moving to unexpected health concerns, acknowledging the opposing view, and finishing with a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'Conversely', and 'Although' are employed to guide the reader through the text. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical or formulaic, and referencing is not always completely fluid. For example, transitional phrases sometimes signal a shift rather than weaving the ideas together seamlessly. To progress further, the writer needs to demonstrate more flexible and less predictable management of cohesive links.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and demonstrates an attempt to incorporate less common lexical items such as 'financially stable', 'cardiovascular diseases', and 'unpredictable future'. The writer successfully conveys meaning, and errors do not impede communication. However, there are noticeable slips in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For instance, 'ongoing' is misspelled as 'ogoing', and phrases like 'give provide reasons' and 'young age' exhibit minor collocation inaccuracies where articles or prepositions are slightly off. To achieve a higher band, the student must demonstrate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary, utilising less common phrasing with greater control and avoiding minor spelling or word-choice errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'when they reach a certain age where they are not able...' and 'Provided that if a person saves...'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, including 'It is an ogoing debate that whether', 'It can be contributed to the fact', and the misspelling 'liablity'. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move beyond this level, the writer needs to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and eliminate minor structural slips, ensuring greater precision in prepositions and clause integration.
