Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially, presenting a clear position agreeing that saving money is important for everyone, including young people. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and repetitive, which keeps the development constrained. While the writer mentions relevant points such as managing emergencies, funding education, and avoiding unnecessary expenses, many of these ideas are under-developed and lack extended explanation or concrete examples. For instance, points about buying cars or clothes are repeated across paragraphs rather than expanded with distinct arguments. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully extend and support each main idea with specific, detailed reasoning or relevant examples throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay displays some basic organization, such as an introductory and concluding framework, but lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, with distinct body paragraphs, but the internal structure of these paragraphs is repetitive and disjointed. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, with phrases like 'To commence with', 'However', and 'on the other hand' applied somewhat formulaicly or illogically regarding the actual flow of arguments. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, creating a sense of confusion for the reader. To improve, the writer must ensure that ideas follow a logical sequence and that cohesive devices connect sentences and paragraphs smoothly and purposefully rather than appearing mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to communicate the basic stance on saving money. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'respectfully for youngsters', 'plethora benefits', and 'maintain their future'. Word forms are sometimes inaccurate, and spelling or phrasing choices occasionally slip, as seen in 'further more' and 'peoples lives'. The range of vocabulary is restricted, with frequent repetition of common words like 'saving money'. To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate a broader range of less common lexical items with greater precision and pay closer attention to word choice and natural collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple or repetitive sentence patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, featuring frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, prepositions, articles, and pluralisation. Examples of these errors include 'money is an important part in everyone's life', 'provides more independent and maintain', and 'even they should save it'. Punctuation is also problematic, including lowercase beginnings for sentences and missing apostrophes. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to increase sentence variety, improve control over complex structures, and eliminate basic grammatical and punctuation inaccuracies.
