Student answer (Band 6.5)

The decline in economies around the world has left people worried about their futures. Saving money is considered important for everyone, including young people as it can provide financial security during hardhsips. However, I believe that while saving money should be a priority, young people should also spend money on meaningful experiences.

Firstly, saving a fixed proportion of your salary should be everyone's priority, including young people; it's a wise decision. Nowadays, due to technological advancements the world has become a scary place for empolyed individuals. You never know when the next wave of layoffs is coming. Saving money not only gives you the confidence to deal with hardships, but it also allows you to stay out of fear. For instance, health emergencies are usually not predictable and not having enough savings in this case can lead a person to debt.

On the other hand, saving money is not important for people who have generational wealth. In this case, it is better that young people spend money on activities like traveling and learning. Spending money on meaningful experiences help people make memories that are ever-lasting and you get to cherish them when you get older. A young person should spend money on adventures while their health allows it. Another advantage of spending money on learning activities like paid courses, can contribute to better personal development. Which subsequently helps a person excel in their career.

In conclusion, I believe that while it is important to save money for rainy days, it is equally necessary to make the most of your young age and spend money on experiences. A balances approach would be better to ensure that a person saves and spends money wisely.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that balances saving with spending on experiences. Main ideas are relevant, such as financial security during layoffs and the personal development gained through travel and courses, which satisfies the requirements for the given band. However, certain points remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the reference to generational wealth feels abrupt and is not fully integrated into the broader argument about youth spending. To move towards a higher band, the writer should ensure that every supporting point is thoroughly elaborated with deeper reasoning and more consistent extension throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion logically. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, moving smoothly from the importance of saving to the counter-argument about experiential spending. However, cohesion relies on somewhat mechanical transitions and referencing, such as starting consecutive sentences with 'Firstly' and 'On the other hand', which can feel formulaic. Furthermore, some sentence fragments, like 'Which subsequently helps a person excel in their career.', disrupt the flow. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while ensuring referencing is consistently smooth and error-free.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'financial security', 'generational wealth', and 'personal development'. However, there are notable spelling errors, such as 'hardhsips' and 'empolyed', alongside slight awkwardness in word choices and collocations like 'stay out of fear' instead of 'free from fear'. These minor lexical errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the ceiling of the current band. To reach the next level, the writer needs to expand their range of less common vocabulary, demonstrate greater precision in collocations, and eliminate spelling mistakes entirely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing displays a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively utilizing structures like conditional clauses and participial phrases, as seen in 'Saving money not only gives you...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including a dangling modifier in 'while their health allows it' and a sentence fragment in 'Which subsequently helps...', but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To progress further, the writer must demonstrate a greater frequency of error-free complex structures and tighter control over punctuation and syntactic boundaries.
