Student answer (Band 6.0)

Savings refer to the portion of a person's income that remains after expediture due to basic necessities. While I agree that people should save up some money for future events, I think that young people should not save all their money.

Human beings face many unexpected events in life that lead to some major expenditure. A road accident, a hurricane, a sudden fire-- all can do major damage to life and property. At such times, personal savings help people weather the storm. But the truth is most people never face as many set backs as they save up for.

People also have the responsibility to give their children a good life. Their food, clothing, Schooling etc. require a large sum of money. Hence, people save up money to accomodate the needs of their offsprings. However research shows that people only bear children when they can support them through their income rather than savings.

As a result, most people have money in their savings account which they never end up spending and only at their old age when they have no fear of the future do they start think about using them. However using the money at an oppurtune time could have led to a better life for them and their family.

Young people especially need to invest in themselves at the golden time of their youth. At peak of their life they have the capabilities to learn a vast amount of skills visiting a multitude of cultures from all around the world. Experiencing as much as possible in the early stages will pave the path for a successful career and a meaningful life overall. But all these require resouces i.e. money. Saving most of their money during their youth is like having your priorities backwards; you can always earn more money but you will only be young once. The risk associated is natural and every great man

In conclusion, savings help people go through tough times most of their savings go unused at the end of their lives. Spending the money in their youth is a wise investment in my oponion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether young people should save money, directly responding to the prompt. Your response includes relevant ideas, but some parts are under-developed. For instance, the paragraph discussing your children and their schooling feels slightly disconnected from the core focus on young people saving money, and your argument regarding unexpected life events is introduced but not fully extended. To move to a higher band, you need to ensure that every main idea is fully supported with relevant examples and explanation throughout the essay, maintaining a consistent focus on the prompt from start to finish.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, making your stance easy to follow. However, the cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases between paragraphs and referencing within sentences could be smoother, as seen in the final incomplete sentence which disrupts the logical flow into the conclusion. Additionally, paragraphing is generally used, but the connection between the body paragraphs could be strengthened by using more sophisticated cohesive devices rather than repeating basic connectors. To reach a higher level of coherence and progression, ensure that every paragraph links logically to the next and that referencing is always clear and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'opportune time', 'weather the storm', and 'multitude of cultures'. However, there are some word-choice errors, spelling mistakes, and inappropriate word forms that slightly detract from the quality of your writing, such as 'expediture' (expenditure), 'offsprings' (offspring), 'oponion' (opinion), and 'oppurtune' (opportune). Furthermore, collocation is occasionally awkward, like 'think about using them'. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of less common vocabulary with greater precision and control, while minimizing spelling slips and ensuring that word choices sound entirely natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct conditional and relative clauses effectively, such as 'While I agree that people should save up...' and 'As a result, most people have money...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles and awkward prepositional phrases, but these rarely impede communication. Examples include 'only at their old age' and the abrupt ending of the fifth paragraph. To improve your grammatical range and accuracy, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free sentences when using complex structures and pay closer attention to punctuation, articles, and sentence completion.
