IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, it has been argued that saving money for the future is essential for all age groups, including young adults. I partly agree with this statement. Although saving money can provide finantial security, investing on education and hobbies can result in long term benefits.

One of the primary reasons I support this idea is because it is of paramount importance to secure your future finances. Nowdays, people often lack the funds to purchase their dream products. They do not have the sufficient earnings to purchase a car or a house. Therefore, people should ensure that they start saving money little by little. Similarly, young adults from low-income households can utilise their set-aside money to secure admission in desired universities. Moreover, savings enable them to be independent in many aspects of thier life. For instance, students would be able to puchase the phone, laptop and other neccessities of their lives without leaning on their parents.

Nevertheless, I also believe that people should invest their earnings on personal development, rather than saving them. Individuals should ensure that they use portion of their income on educations and hobbies, such as travelling and learning skills. People are often keen on experiencing new things in the early ages of their lives. Therefore, they should allocate their money for learning new skills and exploring the world. For example, in the late years of life, people tend to focus on their businesses and family lives and lose the interest into the hobbies.

In conclusion, while the trend of saving money can bring some benefits, the negative side shouldn't be overlooked. I believe that the earnings should be used on hobbies, while also saved a portion of the money. Thus, I partially agree with the idea of saving money.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, successfully fulfilling the criteria for the lower band while showing glimpses of higher-level development. The writer acknowledges the importance of saving while introducing a counter-perspective on investing in personal development. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the point regarding young adults from low-income households utilizing savings for university admission is mentioned, but it lacks specific elaboration or a concrete example to solidify the argument. Similarly, the discussion on hobbies could be further explored with deeper analysis. Despite these minor limitations in depth, the arguments are relevant, well-supported by general examples such as purchasing phones and laptops, and maintain a consistent focus throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout, fully satisfying the requirements of the lower band and exhibiting characteristics of the higher level. Information and ideas are coherently arranged, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose in developing the overall argument. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, as seen in transitions like 'Nevertheless,' 'Therefore,' and 'In conclusion.' Paragraphing is managed sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs presenting opposing views, and the conclusion. Although referencing is generally clear, occasional mechanical links prevent it from reaching the highest tiers of cohesion, yet the overall structure remains logical and easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items alongside standard terminology. Words and phrases such as 'paramount importance,' 'financial security,' and 'personal development' demonstrate a satisfactory lexical resource. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect the limitations of this band, such as 'finantial,' 'Nowdays,' 'puchase,' and 'neccessities.' Furthermore, occasional awkward collocations occur, such as 'investing on' instead of 'investing in' and 'lose the interest into' instead of 'lose interest in.' While these errors do not impede communication, they highlight an inconsistency in precision that keeps the lexical score capped at this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a solid control of sentence structures. The student successfully employs complex clauses, such as conditional and concessive structures like 'Although saving money can provide financial security...' and 'while the trend of saving money can bring some benefits.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, including article omissions and preposition errors inside grammatical patterns, such as 'use portion of their income' and 'in the early ages of their lives.' Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences remain error-free, reflecting the balance of control characteristic of this band.
