IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Saving money for the future is of paramount importance for the teenagers and adults as well. In my opinion, I completely agree that saving funds for the future can be helpful in case of emergency and also this activity helps in learning vital skills like money management.

Everyone wants to save money so that they can tackle undesireable situations. People do not know which problem can occur at which time, so instead of crying over the situation, they should keep themselves prepared. For example, if any family member diagnoses with cancer and requires a handsome amount of money to get treatment, he can start his treatment without any hesitation because he saved enough funds in his life. This can only be possible if we start saving from today and then we can actually bypass those conditions with ease.

Another significant benefit, money saving brings is that people especially young people learn a crucial skill that is money management. Kids in their early age will learn how to spend money, how they can save extra and also where they can invest for the sake of better future. Moreover, for adults having some funds is of paramount importance because they spend less on day-to-day tasks and save a major chunk for the things they really want to do in the upcomming time. For instance, before going on a trip people prepare a plan about their spendings and this money management helps identify which activities to include and which activities to exclude. They invest mostly on things that have high return on investment.

In conclusion, saving money is proven beneficial in both learning skill like funds management and to handle undesireable situations. I strongly agree that people should continue to save with proper planning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction, where you state that you “completely agree,” and the conclusion reinforces this view. You give two relevant reasons: savings can help people manage emergencies, and saving can teach money management. The cancer-treatment example makes the first point concrete, while the trip-planning example illustrates budgeting. This covers the task and provides relevant support. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others: the emergency example is explained in detail, whereas the benefits of saving for young people and the claim about investing for a “high return” receive less explanation. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how young people can build this habit and why it benefits them later in life.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around separate benefits, and a conclusion. The progression from emergency preparation to financial skills is logical, and signposts such as “Another significant benefit,” “Moreover,” and “For instance” help readers follow the argument. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement. Some linking is mechanical, however, and a few references are not fully clear. For example, “he” in the cancer-treatment example could refer to the family member or the person who saved the money. The final sentence of the second body paragraph also moves from trip budgeting to investment returns without clearly connecting the ideas. Use more precise referencing and explain transitions between examples and claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “paramount importance,” “money management,” “funds,” and “return on investment.” These choices show an attempt to use less common and topic-specific language. However, several word-choice and collocation errors make the expression less natural, such as “undesireable situations,” “a handsome amount of money,” “money saving brings,” and “spendings.” There are also spelling errors in “upcomming” and “undesireable.” Repeated use of “money,” “save,” and “funds” limits flexibility. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “unexpected circumstances,” “a substantial sum,” and “saving money,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would make the argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses, as in “if any family member diagnoses with cancer” and “because they spend less on day-to-day tasks.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, though. In the first example, the passive form should be “is diagnosed,” and “a family member” needs an article. The opening phrase “for the teenagers and adults” is also awkwardly formed, while “Another significant benefit, money saving brings” has incorrect punctuation and sentence structure. There are some issues with agreement and phrasing in longer sentences. Review articles, passive verb forms, and clause construction, then proofread complex sentences to improve accuracy.
