IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is relevant for people, including teenagers,to save funds for the future.I agree with this statement.

Nobody knows what the future holds,if you are from a rich home, everything comes your way easily, you pay no bills and just go to school. An emergency can occur in the near by furture and your parents are no longer available to keep up the luxury life you were living before, now you have to keep going to go to school and,pay bills like house rent, electricity bills. But if you dont have any saved money in your savings or atleast a paying job you would be left in shackles and regret for why you didnt plan for the future, not like someone who planned for the future he or she would have little savings to keep the family running.

Personal needs,as a teenager we have our own personal needs, that if we disclose to our parents it may sound ridiculous or not even needed at all ,that is when our savings comes in,once you show your parents the money you save saved to get this need and how serious you want it,they can allow you to get it with your own money,or even buy it for you,in return for your dedication to get this need.

Nevertheless,i know some parents are against this statement, because a teenager is meant to focus on their studies and leave the monetry matters for them until they grow up,but if they dont know how to handle money when young, is it the best decision to learn it when they want to face the the real world?Let me answer that, no its not,and it will not be advised to do so.

In conclusion it is relevant for people, including teenagers to save money for time ahead, for emergency purposes, and personal wants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that people, including teenagers, should save for the future, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons, especially preparing for emergencies and meeting personal needs, and the example of a young person needing to continue school and pay household bills helps illustrate the first point. This covers the task well, but the two reasons are not developed equally: the personal-needs paragraph is less clearly connected to the wider importance of future saving, and the emergency scenario is presented as a broad possibility rather than supported with a specific example. To strengthen the response further, explain how saving benefits people at different stages of life and develop each reason with a clearer consequence or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for reasons and a counterargument, and a conclusion. The progression from emergencies to personal needs and then to parents’ concerns is generally understandable. However, some links feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “Nevertheless” introduces the parents’ opposing view, but the paragraph then shifts quickly to your rebuttal without clearly explaining the relationship between the two ideas. Long sentences joined by commas also make the emergency example difficult to follow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing, and make the connection between each paragraph explicit—for instance, explain how learning to save as a teenager prepares someone to manage money independently later.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “emergency,” “savings,” “personal needs” and “monetary matters.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “what the future holds” and “keep the family running.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes make the meaning less clear: “near by furture,” “keep up the luxury life,” and “left in shackles” do not fit the intended context well. Spelling and word-form errors, including “monetry” and “atleast,” also reduce precision. Aim for common, accurate collocations rather than dramatic expressions, and check spelling carefully. This would make your vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if you are from a rich home” and a question used to challenge the opposing view. This shows some range, but control is uneven. Several sentences run together, as in the emergency example, where multiple clauses are joined with commas; this makes the relationships between ideas harder to follow. There are also errors in sentence construction and agreement, such as “as a teenager we have” and “our savings comes in,” as well as repeated words in “face the the real world.” Use full stops to separate complete ideas, check subject–verb agreement, and practise forming accurate conditional and contrast clauses. More reliable control of these structures would improve clarity.
