IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that saving money is essential for everyone, including the young. I strongly agree with this view as, savings provide protection against unexpected hardship and allow people to build long term fininacial independence.

One of the most compelling reasons to agree with this is that savings protect against emergencies and uncertainty. This is because youngsters often work in casual or entry-level jobs which means they are more exposed to certain income loss. Therefore, chances of job loss, illness and soaring living cost can happen at any time. To illustrate this, COVID-19 pandemic was the world-wide evidence of emergency situation, where people with savings coped far better than others who do not had savings. This clearly highlights that savings are of paramount importance and people ought to have habit of saving in their lives for their overall well-being.

Furthermore, early savings build long-term security through habit and compound growth. This means young people who save regularly build discipline, which carries into adulthood. Another reason, compound interest means money saved earlier grows far more than money saved later and therefore could be utilised for big goals such as house deposit, education, and retirement. For instance, Singapore's Central Provident Fund is a compulsory savings scheme that has helped about 90% of residents own their home. This clearly demonstrates that saving a small amount of money helps young people to ease from the guilt of long-term debt trap.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that savings plays a significant role in everyday life which includes unforseeable conditions and emergency situations. Also it facilitates people with greater financial stability and for fulfilling their goals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly agree that saving matters, and you give two relevant reasons—protection from emergencies and long-term security. Both are extended with explanations and examples, including the pandemic and Singapore’s Central Provident Fund, which helps address the task rather than merely asserting an opinion. The discussion of compound growth and future goals adds a useful second dimension. To strengthen the response further, make the examples more precise and connect them explicitly to young people; the claim that the scheme helped “about 90% of residents own their home” is broad, and the final point about easing “the guilt” of debt is not clearly explained. Overall, the response addresses the question with a sustained position and relevant support, though some claims are generalised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-part structure, with an introduction, two focused body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from emergency protection to long-term financial goals is logical, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “For instance” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This gives the response a coherent overall flow. Some linking is more formulaic than flexible, however: “This clearly highlights” and “This clearly demonstrates” repeat the same summarising pattern, and several sentences begin with “This.” The relationship between the CPF example and the claim about avoiding debt is also not fully clear. Use more varied referencing and make the link between each example and its point explicit to make cohesion smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “unexpected hardship,” “income loss,” “compound interest,” “financial stability” and “retirement.” These choices communicate the main ideas and show attempts to use less common language. At times, however, word choice, collocation and spelling are inaccurate or awkward: “soaring living cost,” “world-wide evidence,” “ease from the guilt of long-term debt trap,” and “fininacial” reduce naturalness. “Savings” is also repeated frequently, and some phrases are vague, such as “certain income loss.” This fits a response with adequate range and some effective topic-specific vocabulary, but with noticeable inaccuracies. Aim for precise, idiomatic combinations and proofread spelling; for example, describe savings as helping people “avoid falling into a long-term debt trap.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a reason clause (“as savings provide…”) and a relative clause (“which carries into adulthood”). Most sentences remain understandable, and the argument is not obscured. Some grammatical errors persist, though: the comma in “I strongly agree with this view as, savings” is misplaced; “people who do not had savings” has an incorrect verb form; and “people ought to have habit” is missing an article. There are also agreement and sentence-pattern problems in “savings plays” and “it facilitates people with greater financial stability.” These examples show why greater accuracy is needed alongside your range. Check subject–verb agreement, articles and verb forms, and revise sentences whose grammatical pattern is uncertain.
