IELTS Writing Task 2 question
It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people believe that saving money is very important, not only for the older generation but for the younger generations as well. I completely agree that young people should start saving money for their future.
In the current situation, without savings, a person can not survive. If an individual starts saving money, the person can use that money however he/she likes to
spend. He/she will not need to be dependent on anybody. Savings give a kind of freedom.
For example: If a person wants to go on a holiday and he/she has a habit of saving, then he/she can plan a holiday without thinking twice. And can enjoy his/her's free time however he/she likes.
The second most important reason is that if a person has savings and if an emergency occurs, such as an unexpected accident or unexpected disease, then a person can use those savings as an emergency fund to pay hospital bills.
For example: Two years ago, when I was working, my uncle met with a horrible accident, and there was some money short, so at that time I gave some of the amount from my savings, which was very helpful. In addition, because I had my savings, I was able to pay the bill on my own without asking anyone for help. That day I realised having savings is a blessing. From that day onwards, I started advising my friends and younger generations to start saving.
In conclusion, having savings is very crucial not only for older generations but for younger generations as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the opening: “I completely agree,” and the conclusion consistently restates that saving matters for younger and older people. You support the view with two relevant reasons—financial independence and being able to meet emergency medical costs—and the personal example about helping your uncle makes the second point particularly convincing. This addresses the task and develops the main ideas with relevant support. To strengthen the response further, explain more fully why saving is important specifically for young people, rather than relying mainly on examples that could apply to anyone. The holiday example also illustrates freedom, but its connection to long-term future security could be made more explicit. Overall, the response is clear and supported, though some reasoning remains general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body sections present reasons and examples, and a conclusion summarises your position. The progression from independence to emergency preparedness is easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, particularly through repeated use of “For example” and “In addition,” and the second body section contains several ideas in one long sequence. The reference “And can enjoy his/her's free time” is also presented as a fragment, which interrupts the flow. Use clearer paragraph breaks and vary the way you connect examples to claims. For instance, explain the holiday example in the same sentence as the point about financial independence, then begin a separate paragraph for emergencies. This would make the organisation more controlled and the links between ideas clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “savings,” “dependent,” “emergency fund,” “hospital bills,” and “financial” ideas such as freedom and independence. These choices make your meaning clear, and the personal example is expressed in accessible language. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “person,” “savings,” and “money,” while some phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “there was some money short” and “a horrible accident.” The repeated “he/she” constructions also make the writing less fluent. Aim for more precise alternatives and natural collocations, such as “a shortfall in funds” or “a serious accident,” and use “individuals,” “young adults,” or pronouns where appropriate. This would give your vocabulary greater flexibility and accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If an individual starts saving money” and a longer sentence describing an emergency. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce accuracy. For example, “a person can not survive” is better written as “a person cannot survive,” and “And can enjoy” is a sentence fragment without a clear subject. In “he/she's free time,” the possessive form is incorrect; write “their free time.” The sentence beginning “The second most important reason is that if…” also becomes difficult to manage because of its repeated clauses. Use a wider range of sentence patterns, but keep longer sentences controlled, checking complete clauses, pronoun forms, and punctuation.
