IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is currently a contentious argument over whether money should be saved for the future by young people or not. I totally agree with this opinion because having a speciafic amount in your bank for any emergency situation makes you calm at the moment as it provides the sense of security.

Mnay people contradict this opinion as they believe that in current economy, money in bank is losing its value everyday. As there is a spike in inflation, most financial consultants argue that its better to invest your money rather than keeping it in your bank account as it will be devalued over time. Moreover it is seen that people who save money for the future eventually makes them stingy.

First reason to support this argument is that having some emergency fund for the future creates the sense of security. People tend to panic more if they find their pocket empty which causes stress and axiety for the future. Young people who build a habit of saving money for the short term purposes, are most likely to spend it in developing different physical skills by joining sports clubs or swimmig classes etc. For the long term usage, young people start to invest their money in stocks or buying metals like gold or silver which will be helpful in their college expenses.

In conclusion, young people should save money for both long-term and short-term expenditures. As it allows them to be secure and mindful about their daily expenses and to invest their money in a meaningful activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: “I totally agree,” and the conclusion consistently supports saving for both short- and long-term needs. You give relevant reasons, including financial security, reduced stress, and using savings for skills or college expenses. This fully covers the central question and shows some development beyond simply stating an opinion. However, the opposing view about inflation and investing is introduced but not clearly answered, and the claim that saving makes people “stingy” is not explored. Some examples, such as investing in stocks or metals, would benefit from a clearer explanation of how they support the value of saving. Developing these points and linking them more explicitly to your position would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting a counterargument, a paragraph supporting your view, and a conclusion. The progression from security to short- and long-term uses is generally understandable, and phrases such as “Moreover,” “First reason,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. At times, however, the organisation feels mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always clear. For example, the paragraph about inflation and people becoming stingy is not connected back to your own position, while the final supporting paragraph combines emergency funds, stress, skills, and investments without clear internal grouping. Use more precise links and organise each paragraph around one main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “inflation,” “financial consultants,” “sense of security,” “emergency fund,” and “long-term expenditures.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some topic-specific language is attempted. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, such as “speciafic,” “Mnay,” “axiety,” and “swimmig.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “calm at the moment” and “invest your money in a meaningful activities” do not express the intended ideas idiomatically. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling carefully. More precise wording would make your argument sound clearer and more controlled without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because having a … amount … makes you calm” and a conditional structure beginning “if they find their pocket empty.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “people who save money … eventually makes them stingy” has faulty subject–verb agreement and sentence construction; “people … make them stingy” would still need clearer phrasing. In “young people start to invest … which will be helpful,” the reference of “which” is unclear, and “in a meaningful activities” has an article–plural mismatch. Review agreement, articles, and clause references, and vary sentence structures while keeping them accurate.
