IELTS Writing Task 2 question

It is important for everyone, including young people, to save money for their future.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Saving money is crucial for everyone, particularly young people who need to prepare for their future. I strongly agree with the statement because it is a beneficial habit which can support one's financial needs in the years to come.

One major benefit is, accumulated fund could be utilised in purchasing land or any other form of property because the invested amount will be significantly increase over the course of time. Furthermore it will provide monetary support when the money is scarce. For example, my father invests his saved money on buying properties which helped us a lot when my sister wanted to take admission in a prestigious educational institute. My father paid her tution fees buy selling the land because we did not have enough funds.

Some people like to invest their savings in Mutual fund contributions and create Fixed deposits at the postoffice on which the firm would provide them with interest and the amount would continue to increase. As a result it would save enough wealth to serve their future purposes. For instance, i used to preserve my pocket money which i invested in SIP and it increased substanially over the course of time after which i used that money to pay for my musical classes.

To conclude, Saving should be a daily practice for everyone, especially for people who are young. I agree with the statement because situations keeps on fluctuating and the times can be unpredicable. The saved money will help one when such time occurs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly agree that saving is important, and you give relevant reasons, including future property purchases and having funds for unexpected needs. The examples about your father selling land to pay your sister’s fees and your own savings for music lessons make the response personal and relevant. This meets the task well, but the two main points are not equally developed: the property example is explained in more detail, while the point about savings for uncertain circumstances remains general. To strengthen the response further, explain more fully how saving benefits young people specifically, and develop the risks or practical implications behind your reasons rather than relying mainly on examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting benefits and examples, and a conclusion that restates your view. Linking phrases such as “Furthermore,” “As a result,” and “For instance” help show relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical, and the second body paragraph shifts from general investment options to your personal experience without clearly explaining how the example supports the broader point. The conclusion also repeats the central claim rather than drawing the reasons together. Use clearer topic sentences and make the link between each example and its main idea explicit; vary transitions so the progression feels more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “accumulated fund,” “financial needs,” “Fixed deposits,” and “interest,” and the reader can understand your main points. There are also attempts at more specific financial language. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “invests his saved money on buying properties,” “preserve my pocket money,” and “serve their future purposes.” Spelling and capitalisation errors, including “tution,” “substanially,” and “i,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations such as “invest savings in property” and “set aside pocket money,” and check spelling and consistent capitalisation carefully. More precise phrasing would make your ideas sound clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a reason clause with “because,” a relative clause in “which helped us a lot,” and a conditional time reference in “when the money is scarce.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “the invested amount will be significantly increase” has an incorrect verb form, and “situations keeps on fluctuating” has subject–verb disagreement. In “paid her tution fees buy selling,” the intended grammatical construction is unclear. Review verb forms after modal verbs, agreement between subjects and verbs, and sentence punctuation. Greater control of these patterns, while retaining varied sentence structures, would make the response more accurate.
