Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You identify the two chart types and correctly report that private studios account for 48%, the largest share. However, the response gives only a very limited account of the data: it does not describe the age-group comparisons in ballet, tap and modern, and it provides no clear overview of the main patterns across both charts. The claim that 18% is the lowest figure is inaccurate; college-based studios are lowest at 10%. The response also falls 94 words short of the required minimum, leaving the task substantially incomplete. To improve, include a concise overview and select key comparisons, such as under-11s favouring ballet while 11–16-year-olds favour modern dance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the opening sentence introduces both charts, followed by a comment about the pie chart. The contrast signalled by “while” is useful, but the bar chart is never discussed, so the response has no progression through the full set of information. The second sentence also combines several points without a clear structure, and “The one thing is that” does not establish a precise relationship between them. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the key details, and organise comparisons by chart or age group. Clear links such as “By contrast” and “In comparison” would help guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “pie chart,” “bar chart,” “dance styles,” “age groups” and “percentage.” These terms show an ability to refer to the visual information, but the range is very limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward. “More young people than anyone” is not a natural way to describe a proportion, while “the lowest percentage” is attached to the wrong figure. The misspellings “bia chart” and “birchart” also reduce clarity. Aim for precise reporting language such as “accounted for,” “represented” and “the smallest share,” and use the chart’s category names accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The opening sentence is a clear, correctly formed complex sentence: “The pie chart illustrates …, while the bar chart compares …”. This shows some control of sentence structure. The rest of the response relies on a single long sentence beginning “The one thing is that,” with awkward construction and unclear relationships between clauses. The phrase “have more young people than anyone around 48%” does not form a clear grammatical comparison, and “the lowest percentage … are 18%” has a mismatch between the singular subject and verb. Use shorter, controlled sentences and check subject–verb agreement; for example, “Private studios account for 48%, the largest proportion.”
