Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart shows the data on the location and types of dance classes that young people are currently attending in Australia's town and the bar graph shows the different kind of dance classes attended by age groups of under 11 to 16 years.

Overall, private studios was the most popular location of dance classes while college-based studios accounted for the least. On the otherhand, ballet dance was the most popular among students under 11, whereas modern dance type was the least among students of same age.

Regarding pie chart, private studios accounted for the major proportion of the total which is 48%, followed by school halls (after-school) 24% of the total. Whereas, community halls and other shared the 18% and college-based studios accounted for the least of the total proportion which was 10%.

Ballet dance was the most popular among students of age under 11, around 600 students enrolled in it, followed by tap dance approximately 450 students attended and just 300 students were enrolled in modern dance. While in students of age 11 to 16 years modern dance accounted for the largest figure just over 500, whereas nearly 420 students liked tap dance and only 300 students attended ballet dance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both charts and give a clear overview: private studios are the largest location category, college-based studios the smallest, and the leading dance style differs by age group. The figures you report are consistent with the chart, including the location percentages and the approximate student totals. This makes the response well-focused and supported by relevant data. To make the account more complete, compare the age groups more explicitly—for example, ballet participation is twice as high among under-11s, while modern attracts substantially more 11–16-year-olds. The overview mentions the under-11 pattern but could also state the contrasting overall pattern for older students, rather than leaving that comparison mainly to the detail paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate detail on the location chart and age-group figures. This helps the reader follow the information. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward. For instance, “Whereas” begins a sentence fragment after the school-hall figure, and “While” similarly introduces the final comparison without a complete main clause. “On the otherhand” also does not connect the contrast smoothly. Use complete sentences and clearer transitions, and group the age-group comparisons so that the contrast between ballet and modern is easy to track. These changes would make the progression more fluent and cohesion less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “proportion,” “enrolled,” and “largest figure,” and the meaning remains clear. There is some repetition of “popular,” “students,” and “accounted for,” and a few choices are imprecise or unnatural: “shared the 18%” and “students liked tap dance” do not describe chart data as precisely as “represented 18%” and “attended tap classes.” The phrase “different kind of dance classes” also needs a plural form. Aim for concise, accurate reporting verbs and vary them where appropriate. More precise collocations would improve flexibility and control without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and the main comparisons are generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement and sentence construction. In “private studios was the most popular location,” the plural subject requires “were”; “the major proportion … which is 48%” shifts awkwardly between past and present; and the clauses beginning “Whereas” and “While” are incomplete as written. There are also article and number issues in “the different kind” and “students of age under 11.” Use complete clauses, check subject–verb agreement, and keep tense consistent when describing the chart. These corrections would make the varied sentence forms more reliable.
